On the 28th of August 2021, KSU launched their latest campaign under the slogan: Democracy Derailed? This campaign’s aim is to pinpoint and discuss the state of Democracy and the Rule of Law in Malta.

Due to several hurdles brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, KSU utilised this time to restructure their aim and focus on what this campaign would be.  With this said, KSU made the current political climate, findings from Investigations and evidence presented in Court and the recently published Public Inquiry, the apex of the discussion for this campaign.

The launch was initiated by KSU President, Neil Zahra, who discussed this project’s relevance to the local political scenario and the importance of youth’s taking stock of their democratic standing.  Thereafter, KSU’s Social Policy Officer and Campaign Coordinator, Alexandra Gaglione, set in motion the campaign while emphasising for a freshers Maltese democratic outlook that stems away from party lines. In her dialogue, she highlights the importance of youths being heard, not as simply the future, but as present voices that look at democracy and the rule of law in an objective manner.

Manuel Delia, as keynote speaker, focused on the history of Maltese Democracy and its development whilst also touching upon the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia and its harrowing political implications and connections. Delia, in his address, asked:

“The truth about Malta’s democracy? Corruption is real.  A journalist who exposed it was killed for it. The corrupt tried to get away with it. Some of them were forced to resign in disgrace, overwhelmed by a snowball that started as a pebble pushed downhill by civil society. But justice has not yet been served.”

Following the addresses, the panel made up of Dr Martina Caruana, Mark Laurence Zammit, Manuel Delia and Rebecca Buttigieg touched upon freedom of expression, partisan politics and active citizenship and civic education; the main sub-themes of the campaign.  The pinnacle of this discussion was made clear, wherein it was emphasised that the population has for too long been viewing democracy and the rule of law from the skewed hyper-partisan lens which has deteriorated the sense of critical thought and the ability to hold governing powers accountable.

KSU hopes that the launch will serve as a taster of what is yet to come. Youths must finally be accounted for and heard.

On the 18th of April, MHSA proudly announced the launch of their new initiative: Student Hub. This initiative aims to maintain and strengthen the community that was once built among the students. In a time of crisis, it is important to unite and support one another.

MHSA was keeping in touch with the Head of Department of Nursing, Dr. Cassar before launching the Student Hub. Karen Louise Stoner, MHSA President, stated that Dr. Cassar “has been really helpful throughout this crisis and constantly checking in with MHSA. She gave us information about the faculty being utilised for a different purpose and that this might be for quite a while.”

After discussing the challenges of online learning, Dr. Cassar put forward some concerns that students had been approaching her with, as did MHSA.

When we reflected as the administrative board of MHSA about how we can reach our students on a singular platform, we reminisced about or favourite parts of the faculty. The idea then sort of all came together of things that were able to be digitalised. It is in no way a replacement of the faculty but at least the closest we can get at this moment.

The Student Hub can be assessed by clicking here and selecting the first tab “Student Hub“. One will come across the various courses run by the faculty and sub-sections on each one of them. The sub-sections consist of:

Faculty Contacts

From the Dean of the faculty to individual lecturers, all will be listed in order to provide easier communication with every lecturer assigned.

The Library

This library is built by the students to the students. Any interesting articles or information a student comes across can just drop it off via the student hub contact email.

Dissertations

Previous students have kindly shared their dissertations with MHSA in order to assist anyone that is currently working on theirs.

Past Papers

These past papers have been taken via sample papers or previous years’ papers. These serve as a guideline as exam formats are subject to change every year.

Writer’s Corner

MHSA wishes to encourage students to engage even more and research topics they are interested in. Their work will then be published in this section.

Faculty Foyer

The Faculty Foyer is known to be brightened up with smiling faces or even, venting sessions among the colleagues. For this reason, MHSA will be putting up regular chat forums among cohorts to catch up and share concerns, laughs, memes and more.

Although this initiative was launched due to unforeseen circumstances, MHSA does not plan on closing it down once all of this passes.

We aim to keep this resource, even when normality settles back in. The students have shown a real appreciation and interaction with the Student Hub so far and we hope this will continue to grow and their contributions will be the key to facilitate this.

Fresh Website

Finally, we have our new portal live. It has been a tough couple of weeks deciding what to do with the old website and articles and where to host the new website. After three years, it was time for a change as the previous website was not as user friendly and lacked attractive features. With a lot of help from my friend Kenneth and a few all nighters, together with the team’s ideas, we managed to put together a fresh-looking website with various new features. Whilst shifting to the new website, we made sure that our writers’ work from the previous website is still available in the ‘Archives‘ section. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to save the featured image for these articles, however, all the content and the information about authors is available. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our previous writers and people that made all this possible.

Fresh Minds

I am happy to be working with new people in The Third Eye’s executive. We have some new minds with great potential to bring the organisation forward with new ideas and expand our reach.

Fresh Articles

Following what I said about the new team, we will strive to create new ideas for articles and publications always acting in the best interest of students attending post-secondary academic institutions. We look forward to continuing and further strengthening our relationships with different organisations to encourage student activism and promote good causes whilst addressing any issues which students face.

I would like to express my gratitude to all those who helped achieve this new portal which The Third Eye team had been brewing for quite a some time. Last but not least I would like to thank our readers for supporting us whilst hoping that you will find this new portal to your liking. Any feedback and opinions are highly appreciated and can be submitted through the online form available in ‘Contact Us‘.
