"My thighs are too big. My boobs are really tiny. My teeth stick out. My tummy isn’t flat. My ears stick out a bit. My ribs stick out too much. I can’t get rid of these stretch marks and the cellulite under my butt cheeks.’ How many times have you stood naked in front of the mirror just before you got in the shower, and listed down the things you hated about your body? How many times have you flicked through the latest issue of a magazine or through your Instagram feed and asked yourself, why couldn’t you have a natural, flawless look with which you are happy? This is the most normal thing which all women and young girls go through from time to time. We have days where we feel like we can just rule the world and others where we just want to hide under the bed covers and down a jar of ben and jerry’s ice cream (as if that will make anything better).

The images fed to us by the media are ending up disheartening young girls from feeling confident to achieve their dreams. At the tender age of 13, 53% of girls are already unhappy with their body image, according to The Representation Project, and as the age increases, so does the percentage — it is estimated that at the age of 17, 78% are unhappy with their body image!

One must keep in mind that most of these body “issues” are not issues in the first place, and they are just who we are; they are completely normal. The more open you are about your body, the more you will realise that you are not alone when it comes to having insecurities and ultimately, you will grasp that there is nothing to be insecure about to begin with!

1. Fat

How many times have you told yourself that you’re "feeling fat’? This is a universal experience for women and it is also growing with men. First of all, one must remember that fatness is not a feeling, as a body image activist from Buzzfeed, Caroline Rothstein had pointed out in a video, “when I "feel fat’, I know that it means that I’m feeling something else and it’s not worth figuring out what it is.” Nonetheless, society encourages us to associate being fat as being a kind of failure.

It is very important to highlight that there is nothing wrong with being fat in the first place. Fat is a natural and necessary feature of the human body, and it is very normal for women to carry an extra layer of fat when compared to men. Many doctors have come to the conclusion that an ideal body weight of an individual is something personal.

2. Cellulite

Everyone is very much aware that there are a numerous amount of products in the market which promote the capability to reduce or eradicate cellulite. What one fails to mention or ever know is that cellulite is the result of how some women’s bodies store fat.

Artists like Nikolay Lam are trying to eradicate this concept that cellulite is a flaw by representing it like a normal body feature — which it is. How is he doing this? By the creation of the anatomically proportioned doll called "Lammily’. Yes, this doll is actually out there. Google it.

3. Acne

8 in 10 teens get acne. Why? It’s caused by hormonal changes which are a part of puberty. This will normally clear up eventually but sometimes, some people are left with a little bit of scaring. Can you get rid of this scaring? Yes! Just go to a dermatologist and he will give you a prescription for your acne. Don’t try over the counter products. It would be much better if you get it checked out properly and to be prescribed for your particular case of acne. This is just a fun (ironic) part of growing up.

4. Uneven Breasts

Almost all women have this conception that there is something known to be as "the perfect breasts’ as let’s face it, boobs are everywhere, and this is why breast augmentation was ranked as the top cosmetic surgery procedure performed in the year 2014.

The truth: breasts come in all shapes and sizes. Big. Small. Perky. Droopy. You name it, it’s there. AND there is also a very common thing called "uneven breasts’. Yes, where one boob is slightly different than the other. This is a very normal thing, which very often happens due to hormonal changes such as being menstrual cycle related or simple as genetics. Want to see now normal this is? Celebrities have spoken out about this issue, including Jennifer Lawrence, who has joked about her uneven breasts and Keira Knightly, who recently posed topless for magazine in order to fight against the stigma. So what? You don’t have what is considered as "perfect boobage’ – it’s fine!

There are numerous of other body issues out there, I just listed a few that came to mind here. These little imperfections are what make you, you. These so-called "issues’ should not be obstacles keeping you from doing your own thing. Keep your head held high and move forward!

At just the age of 31, Thermos CEO, Elizabeth Holmes is the youngest self-made billionaire to have ever made it on Forbes 2015 Female Billionaire List. The Stanford University dropout developed a more convenient and less expensive method of blood testing technology, which now makes her estimated worth at $4.5 billion.

Elizabeth started out her Palo Alto, California based company in 2003 at the tender age of 19, with funds which she had saved to support her through college. What makes this blood testing technology more efficient? Via a painless prick (ideal for those who are petrified of withdrawing blood), her technology can test blood with just a single drop of blood at just a fraction of the price of commercial labs which need more than just one vial.

With the “health-wealth” gap being no secret in America, Americans who have a lower socioeconomic status are more prone to health issues and with this new technology, Elizabeth Holmes hopes to democratize health care. As Fortune reported, Holmes had told a professor, “I want to create a whole new technology, and one that is aimed at helping humanity at all levels, regardless of geography or ethnicity or age or gender.”

Women are very often celebrated for self-sacrifice or humanitarian work rather than their professional achievements, however by creating such an affordable medical solution with the great potential to save lives, Elizabeth Holmes has managed to achieve both!

The Instagram Age https://thirdeyemalta.com/the-instagram-age/ Wed, 28 Jan 2015 23:27:00 +0000 https://thirdeyemalta.com/?p=214 I am pretty sure that when I mention the word "Instagram’ all of you pretty much know that I’m talking about the 4-year old photo and video sharing social media application which is probably found on all of your smartphones.

I am pretty sure that when I mention the word "Instagram’ all of you pretty much know that I’m talking about the 4-year old photo and video sharing social media application which is probably found on all of your smartphones. The app has also made its way to becoming a verb by saying things on the line of "I need to Instagram this’ and added common lexis such as the famous #hashtag and filters (avid users of this application will probably be able to list all filter types).

Instagram has become a part of our daily lives just like Facebook, Twitter and other social media networks. It has cultivated a sort of need for people to take pictures on a constant basis. Don’t worry, I am not pointing any fingers here. I am guilty as charged. Admit it though, you do get that itch to snap a picture of a nice plate of food, a cool building or a breathtaking view, add a filter to it and share it on your profile. It has become a part of our daily routine. Instagram also offers the option to have countless followers, therefore you can follow your favourite band, artist, or celebrity. You can pretty much be up to date with anything possible. Companies, restaurants and brands also make use of this app due to the reason that it is such a powerful and effective marketing tool. People who are automatically interested in your product will follow you and by you posting what you offer, your audience will be more aware and up-to-date, resulting in them wanting to purchase your product. I cannot begin to tell you how many times Instagram was responsible for my sudden trips or cravings to grab a burger at New York Best or buying a dress or two from Missguided. I mean honestly, how can you resist these sort of things when you are bored on the bus scrolling down your feed?

Through personal experience I feel that the app has power to make something trend greatly. It can be something simple. If you go through your feed, you can see a pattern of similarities between posts — yes this is also related to the hashtags you have used or people you might know, but if you actually think about it you will realize what I am talking about. On a daily basis on Instagram, you are bound to see a picture of someone taking a selfie at the gym either showing their process or flaunting their really nice looking body, or a picture of cute looking gym gear which normally showcase a Nike swoosh (as that seems to currently be the trend). Another example is food, such as Oreos and sushi. Without wanting to these things actually make you want to try them out. Until I saw a boom of sushi in social media, I didn’t actually know people who liked sushi and nowadays when I tell people that I don’t like sushi it is as if I told them that their cat just died. Back to the gym example, with my personal experience of wanting to be more active and healthy in my life, those pictures actually became a motivation for me. A plus which I would like to applaud the app for is that people, when seeing other Instagram users being healthier by posting pictures of their healthy meals and shakes, are affected subconsciously.

The application acts like a ripple effect. One thing starts, other people like it and suddenly it’s on the radar and trending internationally. It is a part of our generation and shaping future ones. Funnily enough, it really is in our hands what trends around in the world and the change we bring to it with a simple thing such as an application.

"Tis the Season to be Grateful https://thirdeyemalta.com/tis-the-season-to-be-grateful/ Wed, 24 Dec 2014 21:40:00 +0000 https://thirdeyemalta.com/?p=206 Technically, every one of us should be grateful all year round, but let’s face it, these holidays get the best of our emotional side, even those of us who don’t really like to show it.

Technically, every one of us should be grateful all year round, but let’s face it, these holidays get the best of our emotional side, even those of us who don’t really like to show it. All year round, we are so caught up in our studies, work and social lives, that we tend to forget to sit back and truly think and reflect about how good we actually have it. Perhaps, we tend to be more appreciative during the season with the overdose of charity television ads that we are shown year after year, or maybe it is just our good conscience telling us that we should really look at our life and look at it closely.

Therefore, I have compiled a short list of those things that we should all be thankful for and that should indeed shake us up in our boots to stop complaining for a bit, like we do (admit it we all do it) on a daily basis.

Be grateful:

1. For actually having family members who will annoy you or embarrass you during the holiday family get-togethers

2. For getting really bad presents, because at least someone actually thought of getting you something to begin with

3. For food which is overcooked or burnt, because at least you have food (of some sort that is)

4. For your pesky alarm that woke you up this morning, as some people don’t even get to wake up to another beautiful day

5. For having to slave over studies and assignment work, because you can actually have an education, unlike other children and teenagers around the world who are forced into hard, laborious work

6. For having to give away clothes or throw them away to make more space in your wardrobe for newer clothing items

7. For maybe living too crammed and might having to share your room with your sibling, while others don’t even have a roof over their heads

8. For not living in a war torn country, for very obvious reasons.

Next Sunday, on the eve of a public holiday, Hard Rock Malta will be celebrating 14 years. The international restaurant chain decided to dedicate this evening to celebrate this occasion by giving a small taste of the local alternative music scene.

The new up-and-coming Fuzzhoneys will be warming up the set at 11pm. The female duo started out earlier this year but have taken the scene by storm. They might be just a band of two, but these girls are full of energy and ready to rock your socks off!

Alternative giants nosnow/noalps will be taking the stage accompanied by some guests from other bands who are no strangers to the scene. These guests include Margherita Bonello from Jane Doe, Andrew Francica from the Cosmic Erotic, Caroline from the Fuzzhoneys and Alex Taylor-Helleur on the trumpet and even more! They will be playing quite a bit of an extensive set list with songs from their 3 albums Just Rock, RomantikPolitik and GO GO GO GO.

Tickets for the event will be available by the door, which also include two drinks. Proceeds made from the event will be to benefit WhyHunger an NGO dedicated to fight against hunger and poverty .

Nosnow/noalps are giving our readers the opportunity to win two tickets and a copy of their latest EP! These prizes can be yours if you can answer this question: Name nosnow/noalps’ last album released earlier this year!

’The event that wrapped up all the hard work put together by the organisations took place last night, The KSU Pepsi Campus Fest ’14. This year the event adopted an eastern Moroccan theme, with the slogan, “Marrakech taught me colour”. With an entire tent dedicated to embracing Moroccan culture, KSU definitely lived up to this idea! The chill out area featured a variety of local delicacies, traditional clothes, (both on display and modelled by fellow students) whilst also giving people the opportunity to try some AMAZING Moroccan tea and get traditional henna tattoos.

Of course, there were other stalls accompanying the Moroccan chill out area which included some stands present since the beginning of Freshers’ Week such as The Hot Sausage Company, Badass Burgers, Kombi Bar and RivaReno Icecream. However, the most important of all were the six stands run by volunteers, which throughout the whole event, along with others (about 90 volunteers) in different areas were helping out throughout the whole night. We asked a fellow volunteer, Monique Dimech Genuis, what led her to become a volunteer this year. She said that last year, she wanted to be more involved and since taking part in Students’ fest, she kept being involved in KSU events.

As well as colour, the night celebrated local talent more than ever before! An 89.7 Bay stage was introduced which led to an even longer line-up! This included The New Victorians, Relikc, The Crowns, Airport Impressions, Forty Days of Rain and Lucy’s Last. The introduction of the new stage also ensured that transitions between bands were short and smooth sailing, so there was never a dull moment. With some well-known bands and others which are still fresh on the scene, all the bands gave brilliant performances and contributed to making the event a great success! We also had the pleasure to get some quick comments from the bands.

The New Victorians

The New Victorians opened up the event and kicked it off with a cover for "It’s Time’ by Imagine Dragons along with other covers and their original work. The one that stood out the most was definitely "Dustpile’ whose lyrics were written a long time ago and now they have just released its music video. They had a jam packed year which included the previously mentioned music video, finishing their album, performing at The Farsons Great Beer Festival, and recently, Rockestra. To them was a great learning experience and the fact that they were performing on Rockestra’s stage was overwhelming!

Relikc

Relikc started their act with "Royals’ by Lorde. As Keith Zammit put it, the band had been "hibernating’, since they changed the drummer and were all thinking as a band what the future holds for them and if they should continue making music. They kicked it off again this year. At the moment, they are working on some original work so as to release an album. One of their songs, "Prime time’ whose lyric video was released this year, was written by the bassist and was quickly released since they had everything planned out for it. Their experience at The Farsons Great Beer Festival was their fourth time and to be back on that stage was amazing and similar to yesterday night!

The Crowns

The Crowns were jamming to their originals and cover versions of various songs from "Night Visions’ by Imagine Dragons to their song, "Someone else’, which is featured in the Bay Top 10. The lead singer, Victorio Gauci, said that it is simply amazing to have local support from the fans and the local radio station, but to be in the chart is even better! The Crowns have had quite a busy year, everywhere they went had a different atmosphere and audience. Always giving their 100%. However, their favourite event was The Music & Steel Festival which had the best vibe and atmosphere. This was their 3rd time performing at the campus fest, their first time in 2010 was their first performance and they were still excited to perform again yesterday.

Airport Impressions

Airport Impressions closed off the night by featuring various singles from their new album "Mariette’ which was released earlier this year. Their style includes a blend of pop and rock. Being one of Malta’s leading bands and having various hits on the Bay Top 10 chart, Airport Impressions did not fail to include some classics which are always a crowd pleaser resulting into the crowd singing along to their all-time favourites.

Forty Days of Rain

We spoke with Brendan Jackson from Forty Days of Rain who was part of Scream Daisy. He has been making music for the masses for a long time. "Strings left to Fray’ is their newly debuted single and is their new experience to reach out to younger crowds. The band has a commitment to its members. They are older than others, however, they have a new found excitement to reach new levels thanks to their new bassist who is quite young and brought back the energy or as Jackson put it, "a new mojo’.

Lucy’s Last

Lucy’s Last are a new aspiring band. The lead singer, Mia Scerri appropriately answered, “Ugh, men” when we asked how would she describe the band. She also added that their style is a variety of classic rock, alternative, blues and sometime heavy. However, new projects are in motion for Lucy’s Last which are mainly alternative rock blues. Their new video, "Jenna’, caused quite the stir, however, her story is all in the lyrics. The other band members had some plans for the night which primarily included that the sound works, good drinking, having fun and being able to reach out to new audiences.

Facts About Going to an All-Girls School https://thirdeyemalta.com/facts-about-going-to-an-all-girls-school/ Sat, 20 Sep 2014 18:56:00 +0000 https://thirdeyemalta.com/?p=141 If you went to one when you were younger, start ticking off these facts off of your list and start cringing at the reality of spending 13 years in the same school with the same girls.

]]>
This is basically a lowdown on the reality of going to an all-girls school. If you went to one when you were younger, start ticking off these facts off of your list and start cringing at the reality of spending 13 years in the same school with the same girls.

1) Your uniform rules were strict and if you didn’t follow it you would be given a "fine’. Yes. Your skirt had to be exactly just above the knee, your shirt neatly tucked in, your tie/collar/bow (whichever one you had) had to be tight against your neck, all your hair pulled back; for physical education your shoes had to be completely white, the only type of earrings allowed were small gold or silver studs. If you decided to go to school with a little bit of eyeliner, you were not only expected to immediately remove it but also pay a fine for each eye.

2) If you participated in the school monthly/weekly mass via reading during the mass or by joining the choir, you would gain favor by practically anyone from the staff.

3) When a boy was sited walking in the street from the classroom window, everyone (including yourself out of curiosity) would stampede to the windows to view this "alien’ specimen and one of your brave classmates would cat call him and the specimen would turn in your direction and everyone would flee the scene and return to their seats giggling. Like hyenas.

4) Outings meant that you were allowed to ditch that uptight uniform and trade it in for something more casual. Or if you had to wear your uniform and if you knew that other schools will be there, especially boy schools, you probably rolled up your skirt one or twice. Or three times.

It also meant that you could sneak in your MP3 to listen to on the bus to the location.

You could bring your camera to take selfies of you and your friends posing mainly in the classroom on your desks or in the bus seats. Little of the photographs contained anything frugal from the outing. For those slightly nerdier, would attempt to show off their photography skills in front of everyone. Bending in awkward positions in order to get that shot, from "that angle’ and "this angle’.

5) Sports Day meant a whole day of playing games. For those who usually aren’t sports enthusiasts, this was the day when suddenly there is great enthusiasm to be able to beat that class or group of girls you’ve been meaning to. In the name of sports. Meaning that if you happen to be playing rugby, no one would say a thing if you happen to "throw her on the ground’ because you were in your sportive spirit.

6) Casual Day was a chance to showcase your full fashion sense, in a decent manner that is. Since obviously you wouldn’t be able to or rather it wasn’t the occasion to go full out (unless it’s the Christmas or End of Year party), you pulled out your newest and best branded clothing you owned. Tight fit jeans, a cute top, and an edgy jacket, complimented with cute jewelry and a mean ass pair of shoes. And you never forgot to go and get your hair done the day before and slapped on more make up than usual, like opting for a shinier lip-gloss.

7) Christmas and End of Year parties, where not just excuses for being able to go in casual clothing to school or the venue, but it was the place where there would be an open dance floor where you could bust those sexy moves that you had been seeing in MTV music videos. Admit it. You all did it.

8) The yearly Talent Show, was not just a show. The talent part was in bold, italics and underlined. Everyone fought for the spotlight or the star role. If you were cast in the choir, you made damn sure that you belted out those notes correctly and amazingly adding a little Mariah riff if you could. If you were a narrator, you made sure you read carefully in the most appealing sexy journalist voice you had. If you were in the star role, you made sure that no one forgot that fact. Repeatedly.

9) If you were labeled with a joke one time, you were reminded of it on a daily basis for the rest of the years to come. If this joke started from primary school, it lived on till you changed schools. Yes, even Sixth Form. If the same people were with you in the course, the Lord bless your soul.

10) When the head girl tried to use her authority on you and threatened to tell on you. You would be like:

11) If you were on your period and you didn’t have pads, there were probably another two or five girls who also had their period and you could lend one from them.

12) When two best friends fought, the news travelled fast and was taken as a shock more than when Brad and Jennifer split up.

13) You grew up with these people and you had to put up with each other’s bull for years. Mass murder crossed your mind at some point.

In the end though, as much as you counted down the days to leave that school to finally breathe, somehow those girls were like your sisters. You shared fond memories with them, both good and bad. You grew up with them and shared the most informative years of your life, and you learnt the best life lessons from your experiences together.

You may have come across multiple videos titled "The Ice Bucket Challenge’ over the last couple of weeks. From regular people to high profile celebrities such as Chris Pratt, Oprah, Jimmy Fallon and Bill Gates, all these people were inspired by one man, Pete Frates. This man’s fight against ASL (amyothropic lateral sclerosis) began this viral movement. The challenge is merely a simple idea with one goal — to raise awareness for the disease and strike it out.

This challenge has lit all social media on fire raising both money and awareness for ASL, which is commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. This disease attacks the nerve cells which ultimately leads to total paralysis, though the mind remains sharp. Unfortunately, the life expectancy is typically two to five years from the time of diagnosis.

The challenge basically goes like this: people take a video of themselves having a bucket full of ice cold water being dumped over their heads and share it over different social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. At the end of the video the person who did the challenge must nominate other people to do the same in 24 hours or donate $100 to ALS (some people opt to do both).

In a video taken last December, Mr. Frates (now having lost the ability to move his arms and legs and communicates through eye-gaze technology) said: “The story now goes: You’ve got ALS, have it for a while, a long while, but either way, the end is the same. ALS always wins. So in order to rewrite the end of it, we need to raise awareness, money.”

It’s been at the back of my mind for a while now, the fact that I will be leaving my teenage years behind. You know how most people say that you’re basically an adult at the age of 18 — well I guess, yes you are legal for most stuff and you are allowed to start thinking about getting that drivers’ license you’ve been really craving since you started going out and staying out late and the most daunting problem of the evening is "How the hell am I getting home?’. Turning 20 is like turning 13, you’re leaving a chapter behind in your life and things are suddenly getting more serious. When you’re leaving behind your childhood and moving on to your teen years, the problems you were faced with at the time are on the lines of “I need to start shaving”, “Why haven’t my boobs grown yet?”, “Why am I always in pain?”, “When will I have my first actual boyfriend/girlfriend?”.

When you’re leaving your teen years behind, and moving onto your twenties, the things you face are, unfortunately, not as simple. They are more about life changing concerns like, if you’d like to settle down with someone or remain the perennially single, promiscuous serial dater until you’re 30 or later and turn out to be a silver fox like George Clooney and maybe settle down eventually. If whether or not you want to travel the world before actually taking things majorly serious with anything like a career or a relationship. If whether you are completely sure about the career path that you’re taking, which you most probably decided on at the age of 13, when you had to choose those pesky subjects in secondary school (because it makes perfect sense to choose a career for the rest of your life at the tender age of 13).

I am one of those people who is dreading turning twenty for the simple fact that I take a good look around me and I see two extremities. One being a lot of people that have got everything sorted and know exactly where their life is headed, it’s like they have it all mapped out. Then on the other hand there are those who have absolutely no clue what they’re doing with their lives and just rolling with the punches.

Then there’s just me, where I feel like I’m standing in the middle of a vast ocean. One minute I can see the shore and I say to myself “Jolly good! I got it!” and the next moment it’s just ocean and even more ocean. If you asked me a year ago about which path my life was heading down, I think I would have been able to give some sort of an outline. Suddenly I can’t even map out the end of the week most of the time and I just take everything as it comes and deal with everything day by day because that is all I seem to be able to do. A friend once told me that, the best way to live is day by day, if not hour by hour, as things change in an instant from one moment to another. You never know what turn of events you might be facing in the coming hours. What I mean to say is this, there are moments when I’m only 80% sure of what I’m doing and the other 20% is vast uncertainty. This comes from the simple fear of mucking things up. You know how you’re always told that if you take a wrong turn in your life well then, god help you. So it’s that fear holding me back mainly from feeling confident to make choices, to speak up, to pursue what I desire in life, but sometimes you have to tell yourself to toughen up and just dive into it. Like the infamous Lemony Snicket once said, “If we wait until we’re ready, we’ll be waiting for the rest of our lives, let’s go”.

So if you think that you’re alone in being unsure of your future, it is not the case at all. Some people have the ability to figure things out quicker than others or they’re not so afraid of taking risks or taking those wrong turns in life. We just need to pluck up the courage sometimes, try things out and see what fits us best. It’s all about finding that shoe with the perfect fit like Cinderella, and you know that it is going to be a part of your happily ever after.

nosnow/noalps have to be one of the biggest band names in the Maltese music scene. With their pop-y indie rock coupled with other influences such as punk, reggae and ska, nosnow/noalps have literally gone the distance from playing at the yearly Farsons Beer Festival, Isle of MTV Music Week and local music awards such as 89.7 Bay Awards and the MMAs to travelling around Europe to further develop their music.

After their last album titled Romantikpolitik in 2011, they skyrocketed and had quite a couple of busy years touring Europe with locations such as Denmark, England and Italy. Last year, they relocated in Denmark for a period of time playing a few shows and worked on a couple of songs which led to the recording and release of their single N.E.W last October. This single was a little taste of what was yet to come for their new EP titled GO GO GO GO. By just seeing the title standing on its own you can already sense the energy and vibe that this EP has to offer radiating out of it, mainly mirroring the bands hectic past year of travelling and playing and creating new music.

We were really excited that we, The Third Eye, had to get a chance of a first glimpse of the EP which is being launched this coming Friday at Zion. The EP offers an array of sounds, from energetic tunes which make you want to be in the front line of a gig jumping in the middle of a mosh pit, to relaxing ones which you can sit back and listen to in your down time. It is an EP filled with diversity in sound, so even if you aren’t one so accustomed to the scene, you are bound to find a song which will appeal to your musical taste. You can honestly tell that, as an EP, it is a true reflection of emotions, the real spectrum experienced by everyone. The album consists of not only singles, such as ones released or played in the past couple of weeks, the self-titled "GO GO GO GO’, Black Panther, Heavy and N.E.W, but there are also a couple of remixes of other tracks also within the EP.

nosnow/noalps will be launching their EP this coming Friday the 27th of June with a live performance at Zion, with supporting acts Berne, Jane Doe and K ? S S E T T E.

The entrance to the event is €7, or €10 which will include a CD of the EP. For more information about the event check out the Facebook event in the link below:
