With the Covid-19 (Novel Corona Virus) cases increasing, the Maltese population is reacting, amongst them the University of Malta students and staff.

Lecturers are cancelling more lectures with each day and students are also not attending on their own accord. Whilst some lectures are being substituted by videos, online resources, or virtual lectures, some lectures are being cancelled altogether with no compensation from the lecturer’s end. The record of cancelled lectures may be negatively impacting students’ academic life, especially when no alternative is offered, considering that Dissertation deadlines are coming up for many final-year students. There are also practical units (such as placements, tutorials, presentations) that cannot be substituted or compensated for which will have to be postponed.

The pandemic has also been negatively affecting student activism and extra-curricular activities altogether.

Several events that have been in the works for student organisations across campus planned for March and April have been cancelled or postponed until further notice. This has resulted in a lot of internal disruption amongst student organisations. Some of the key events that have been cancelled include KSU’s Annual Car Treasure Hunt and Egypt International Trip, whilst KSU has not issued an official statement regarding Student Fest which is planned for the 2nd week of April.

UMASA (University of Malta Academic Staff Association) have just issued a statement via email to all student organisations and media houses regarding the pandemic. They have requested for all lectures to be cancelled until the end of Easter recess. Due to this, many student organisations and students alike have stepped forward to express their concerns about such a potentially impactful decision, including KSU.

In a statement on Facebook, KSU have emphasised that they hold the students’ wellbeing and safety at utmost importance, whilst voicing their concern as to how lectures will be handled and whether alternatives will be considered. That said, the Council have sent an email to student organisations and representatives to hold an urgent KPS/KE meeting tonight to zero in on what position the University student body should take regarding the situation.

MMSA placed 1st in the KSU Room Allocation Report classifications for their 8th consecutive year.

In today’s KPS meeting, KSU announced the results for this year’s Room Allocation Report. MMSA placed first for their 8th consecutive year whilst SDM were runner-up, and ELSA placed third.

The entire list of the results can be seen below in comparison with last year’s classification.

It should be noted that the RAR results of 2018 are according to the original list published by KSU, whereas in reality TDM2000 was later recognised by Senate to have ranked 5th in fact (not 10th) in the RAR of 2018. All other results and comparisons drawn should be analysed with this in mind.

The classification for the first 5 spots remained the same with

The organisations that most improved from last year were JCA, ESN and Wolves.

There were some organisations that did not submit the RAR this year, in comparison with last year, which included: ICTSA, WeAre, AIESEC, UoM Racing, and MUSC.

There were some newcomers to the classification as well, which included: JCA, MIRSA, GUG, and MAKE.

The Third Eye would like to congratulate all the organisations’ on their place in the RAR classification!

The RAR is a report prepared by student organisations recording their past year. It is done so that offices and freshers’ stands are assigned according to the results by KSU.

Uni tends to take a real toll on you, irrelevant of whether you try to take care of yourself or not. If you simply don’t care and eat ramen noodles every other day your body will suffer – and if you try to keep fit and healthy, your wallet will.

ASCS have rallied together several student and health orgs to lift you out of the limbo that is the uni lifestyle. We present to you, Health is Wealth. This week the Quad will be transformed into an oasis of tips, tricks and skills that will help you lead a better, healthier and most importantly a more budget-conscious uni lifestyle.

Anyone who ever had the blessing of embracing uni life is well aware that good grades and deadlines are prioritised in students’ lives, as it should be. However, more often than not it is unfortunately at the stake of a proper diet, mental stability and God forbid – exercise. That said, the campaign will be tackling these 3 pillars of a healthy lifestyle: nutrition, mental health and physical activity.

This week will be jampacked with everything and anything you need to achieve fitness-guru status on Instagram.

Be it instant life-hacks or long-term life changes, you’ll be covered. With deadlines and exams coming up; get your life in order, and take advantage of the discussions, workshops, and activities that’ll be at your disposal. Whether it’s a few tweaks and buffs or a complete and drastic life change, you’re bound to have acquired something from the week.

The event starts tomorrow, 26th November and lasts till 2nd December on Quad. ASCS will be collaborating with UoM Futsal, MMSA, MHSA, Betapsi, Wolves Rugby, UoM Rowing, Fondazzjoni Pippo and the National Blood Transfusion Service.

Health is Wealth – so make the change and cash in.

MHSA and Betapsi joined forces to raise awareness on Mental Health in front of the Parliament building in Valletta, this Sunday 21st October.

Both organisations were thrilled to see that people of all ages attended this event in order to learn more about the stigma that plagues our society. The stand had several activities tied to mental health to help those who attended understand a bit more of what is trying to be promoted.

Art Therapy

Art therapy was available for those who wanted to express their ideas on how they view mental health. Many children drew pictures of superheroes helping those in need. This was very heartwarming to see as it gives us a glimpse of how children have a better grasp of the issue than most adults do.

Animal Therapy

Another therapeutic activity that was available was animal therapy and this was also another huge hit with children. It helped them relax and immediate results were clear. Those who played with the dogs, allowed themselves to be more vulnerable and discuss more about mental health.

Yoga

Yoga was also available to promote exercise and its relation to mental health. It is scientifically proven that physical exercise benefits the state of mind of every human being. This activity attracted a lot of people that either participated or simply watched.

Mental Health Tree

There was also a ‘Mental Health Tree’ which people could write beautiful and endearing thoughts they wanted to share with everyone. It was touching to see all of the messages people had to write to help others who might be going through something.

The organisations provided them with several statements that were either myths or truths about mental health, to test visitors’ knowledge. It was surprising to see how many people did not know about basic facts on mental health but thankfully, the organisations were there to educate people on the matter and help them understand how crucial it is to break this stigma that surrounds us.

Taken by Denilson Brincat

The purpose of the event was definitely fulfilled and all the expectations that the organisations had, were met. One member of one of the organisations said that it was very encouraging to see young children and elderly people, eager to learn about mental health.

It is ok to accept help from professionals. It is ok to go to therapy and it is especially ok to learn how to get help and where to get it from.

Check out how the business, the students and ICTSA reacted to yesterday’s annual Industry Expo.

The Businesses

Congrats to all the students who attended! Your enthusiasm, eagerness and informed questions were duly noted. That said, the gist of feedback from businesses was a wide appreciation for all the enthusiasm and informed questions supplied by the attendees.

The Students

To those that didn’t go – you missed out on freebies! At least that’s partly what the students we asked noted. Those present also commended the event as a great opportunity for networking and just getting general information about companies you might potentially work with.

ICTSA

Year after year the students don’t disappoint. ICTSA praised this year’s expo as a record turnout that even exceeded their expectations! That was not to mention the businesses that provided a quality first-hand experience for all the visitors.

ICTSA also personally commented on their event and expressed their gratitude for another successful Industry Expo!

Today ICTSA held the 5th edition of their ICTSA Industry Expo, together with the Faculty of ICT, where the event took place. Here a record number of attending students visited over 20 companies and learnt about what they offer to the industry. Students had the opportunity to get insight on what each company offers, learning first hand from the experts who power the fields. This served as a great opportunity for students to survey the commercial aspect of the current
career landscape and to network with their potential future employers.

ICTSA would like to thank the participating companies who took their time to exhibit their work, as well as all the students who attended and interacted with the companies. This event wouldn’t have been possible without the continuous support of the Faculty of ICT.

Pulse launched their campaign in support of breast cancer awareness ‘Face your fear’ today, October 15th at noon. This initiative aims to end the stigma and fear that surrounds the subject and help to ensure that assistance is always readily available.

Participants were given a pink ribbon and encouraged to wear it until the end of October to show their support for the cause. However, the speaker at the launch appealed to ensure that the end of the month doesn’t signify the end of the discussion.

Mrs. Michelle Muscat also attended the event on behalf of the Marigold Foundation of which she is the chairperson. She encouraged students to enjoy their studies and work hard and called for them to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Mrs. Muscat insisted that breast cancer is largely curable if it is detected early on; so early detection is crucial. She also called for an end to the stigma that only women are affected as the cancer can befall men too.

The Marigold Foundation gave out leaflets explaining when and how to check for breast cancer in both sexes. The Foundation’s school programme also donated vouchers to the school to encourage reading.

SDM just launched their latest charity campaign – Hope. This time in aid of Bjorn Formosa and ALS Malta.

The campaign aims to help ALS Malta in their new project to help Bjorn Formosa build his second home for ALS patients. “Having raised over 35,000 for charity organisations throughout the years, we hope to continue to build on this with Hope,” said Manwela Azzopardi, SDM representative. Donations can be given to SDM members that will be going around with tokens at JC, UoM, ITS and MCAST.

                                                                                                                        Taken by SDM

“This will not be a campaign based on money only however,” said Ms. Azzopardi. In fact social media will be used a lot to give messages of encouragement to those going through tough times. SDM also extended their invitation to students that wish to join them in their endeavor. “We wish that the positivity ignited by this initiative spreads across all of Malta and Gozo and not be restricted to academic institutions only.”

SDM’s efforts will culminate on October 19th, as the organisation will be helping during the ALS marathon on Xarabank.

Bjorn himself was also present at the launch, despite still recovering from a serious operation he had had the day before.

“Thank you to SDM who so kindly chose to wholeheartedly take on this project” – Bjorn

For those of you that missed this year’s Campus Fest here’s a rundown of how Uni was transformed from a pit of an anxiety and deadlines to an oasis of games and live bands.

DESA

Ever wanted to feel like an explorer on a momentous expedition? Roam campus for all the organisations and activities to take part in, from beer pong to yoga. In the end get in the chance to win an actual notebook for you to recount your ‘grand tour’!

ELSA

Spin the wheel, get a dare and pray that it’s an easy one. Whether it’s downing wasabi and prunes, doing impersonations or pushups, you’ll find yourself determined to win no matter what whilst having fun along the way!

TDM and GħSL

Ever felt UoM doesn’t offer the whole university experience as it lacks the FRATs, Sororities and dorms? Don’t fret – you can get to experience some of that wholesome drunken fun of chugging a beer with the excuse that you’re merely doing it as part of a game, with some flip a cup and beer pong.

UoM Futsal

Nothing to show your appreciation for who keeps the team in shape, solves problems and makes sure everyone is always happy – like a cake in the face. Line-up, drag your president to the booth, promise them free cake, and then deliver! You never said how you’ll be giving them the cake anyways.

ACSC

It’s free food with an exciting twist – what else could you need? Put on a blindfold and get guessing – whether you’re in it to test your knowledge of food or to gobble down free sample, no one will ever know!

KSU

Grab a pair of headphones and show off your best dance moves! Or, you can also just look at a crowd of people seemingly dancing to nothingness in awe and draw resemblances to a flock of pigeons on the Upper Barrakka. Either way you’re bound to get a kick out of it!

BetaPsi

Whether you’re more Miley Cyrus or Hannah Montana you can choose to either sit down and have a civil board game or test your flexibility and stretch yourself in all directions in a game of Twister accordingly. You’ve got the best of both worlds!

Wolves RFC

You’ll understand how good an apple can be once you’ve had to submerge your head in cold water and bob for one. Throw in some element of competition and the promise of free food (albeit fruit) and you won’t regret a thing!

MHSA

Get ready to bend sideways, backward and all the ways to get your energy flowing and chi’s balancing. Forget antibiotics and vaccinations, praising the sun and the downward dog are the new pioneers in health!

Bonus

Pepsi Taste Test
No tokens needed for these drinks! Pepsi or Coca Cola? As long as we get 2 free drinks we’ll settle for either or.

Free Pringles
For all the bargain-seekers out there, scour the grounds for the Pringle people in hunt of a free can or two (or three)!

Live Bands
Whether it’s popular covers or more indie originals you’re into Dav.Jr, Lara & The Jukeboys and ManaTapu have got you covered all night.
