A manager at the National Book Council, Jasmine Bajada, made several remarks about local writers needing to “whore” themselves out in order to have a successful career. This has proven to upset quite a few individuals, namely PEN Malta.

President of PEN Malta, Immanuel Mifsud, wrote a letter to Mark Camilleri, the executive chairman at the National Book Council, addressing these remarks. He expresses how “unacceptable” it is for someone who is “employed by public funds” to make such comments. Mifsud highlights the fact that the role of Bajada should be to “help” and “promote” the book industry.

In the letter, Immanuel Mifsud urges for the situation to be addressed in a “transparent” manner. He explains how disappointing it is that instead of pushing Bajada for an official apology, the Council released one on her behalf. Mifsud states that through Bajada’s comments, she has ridiculed the Council, along with authors, publishers and critics alike.

Given that Bajada is responsible for events and activities of the Council, Mifsud says that any future activity will be tainted with “suspicion” and “distrust”, as a result of her actions.

Daphne Schembri is the 25-year-old behind the scrumptious creations of Daphne’s Bespoke Bakes. She always had this love for cooking but there was a special place in her heart where the passion for baking lay. Daphne has been a chef since 2012 and has also lived and worked in the United Kingdom to pursue her dreams and learn more about this expertise!

Daph’s bakes is all about providing fresh, delicious bespoke (which means custom!) bakes and treats. When one visits her Facebook or Instagram page, they are greeted with a colourful variety of cakes, muffins, cookies – you name it! And what makes the brand even more special is that Daphne truly thought of everyone on the allergen spectrum. Almost all of the bakes can be made gluten-free, lactose-free and even vegan! No one gets left behind.

How it all started…

Daphne shared with The Third Eye that she has always wanted to open up her own bakery but some factors might have restrained her from doing so. When the pandemic hit, some decided to wait for the storm to pass but in Daphne’s case, she pushed herself even more! She worked eagerly to open up Daphne’s Bespoke Bakes and she now owns a little bakery from her own home.

Work in progress

Daphne is currently working on an Autumn giveaway – just in time to get all of us in the autumn vibes. Loads of delicious treats will be given for one to enjoy with his friends, family or, if you’re feeling a bit greedy that day, for yourself!

The local baker looks forward to collaborating with local coffee shops and small restaurants where she can supply and display her bakes.

Daphne shared that her favourite creation was by far an ocean-themed cake that she made for her nephew’s third birthday!

“It took me four days to finish it but the look on his face when he saw it was priceless!”

Future aspirations

The local baker would eventually like to take her talent and skill and showcase it to other parts of the world.

“In the next 5 to 10 years, I would like to move abroad and open up my own small bakery – keeping up my values of fresh, delicious and affordable bespoke bakes.”

While we must admit that we will miss her heavenly creations, we absolutely cannot wait to see Daphne following her dreams!

19 years of experience as a chef; with a repertoire that includes leading 5 star hotels, fine dining restaurants and unique cafe’s, Lara has a serious passion for baking. She is currently holding down a full-time job as Eri’s Gourmet Café’s Pastry Chef, but she’s got her own little side business which fuels her passion further.

Lara shared with The Third Eye;

I’m lucky to work at such a unique place that gives me the opportunity to create new baked item’s and it is thanks to this that I get my muse and my passion for baking.

Mistika’s Story

Although Lara had always wished to have a small business she was too scared to take the leap. 6 years ago, Lara was asked to host a cupcake table at the Malta Comic Con and she graciously accepted. Year after year the stand became increasingly successful and Lara took it as a clear sign to start up her own baking brand.

Towards the end of last year, Lara brainstormed ideas in hopes of finding the right name to fit her marvelously mystical cakes. She searched and searched for a simple yet catchy name that would best represent her. Lara’s friends pitched a couple of great name ideas but it just became harder to choose. This was until….

A friend of mine suggested Mistika which is the Maltese translation for Mystique, I instantly fell in love with the name and from there we started our Brand!

Starting out this Brand came with many challenges, such as the creation of her favourite work- the Geode Cake

I made the cake for a close friend of mine, I was terrified of doing it as it was a first for me but it reached my high expectations and surpassed them.

Quality over Quantity

Mistika has developed into a well organized and self-sufficient brand. Lara is a firm believer of ‘quality over quantity.’ She’ll only accept a minimum amount of orders to devout her full attention to each request as it comes in. These orders are made with ethically sourced products and ingredients, turning to local Maltese produce whenever possible as Lara likes supporting small local businesses that are rich in quality.

Lara spoke to The Third Eye about some of the work she has done with local businesses;

I recently finished a collobaration with a fellow creator ‘X or X Creative’ although our  creations are entirely different, it was very intresting and fun for us both as we learned about each others skills and talents and the work that goes behind our  creations. I also have a few future collaborations with other small businesses  planned out for the coming year.

Mistika’s Fortune Telling

Lara’s got a few ideas in the pipeline for us. She is currently working on the launch of an exclusive Mistika Menu- it will host small unique pastries containing from a variety of traditional Maltese flavours to modern favourites, each with a unique Mistika twist to it.

Lets hope that this Menu will include Lara’s personal favourites; the Biscoff cake ( a top seller)!

Looking a bit further ahead, Lara dreams of owning her own small bakery one day. She feels great satisfaction when clients return for more order as it fills her with hope and pride, seeing these clients in store would be quite fulfilling.

Lara also shared with The Third Eye:

Something that is also very important behind my whole Brand is the constant support that I get from my partner Neil my family and my friends, their support keeps my Brand going.

Follow Mistika for more on her tantalising cakes and bakes on Instagram!

On Saturday 30th June, a sizeable crowd counting in hundreds gathered in Valletta in a demonstration to safeguard Malta’s environment. Following the recent numerous uprooting of trees across the island, the attendees called for additional and enforced protection of trees while slamming the widening of roads as an inadequate solution to solve traffic issues.

Among their pleas, the people demanded better protection of ODZ spaces, more environmentally conscious products at more affordable prices, and efficient public transportation. Some banners called for a national cycling strategy, and others for more green public spaces.

Cyclists joined in with their bikes, as horns and bells filled the air accompanying the relatively calm and peaceful protest. A number of politicians were present, including Nationalist and AD MPs; however no political bias was evident. In fact, key speakers condemned past and present administrations’ acts for contributing to the present-day problem, naming among others the Santa Venera Tunnels and other bypasses around Malta.

The first keynote speaker remarked how “Id-dinja mhux biss tal-bniedem biex igawdi minna” and called for a clear, focused strategy for sustainable development. Ultimately, the aim and purpose of the demonstration was loud and clear; time for politicians to start giving priority to the environment once and for all.
