The internet is a vast place, ever since its inception, it’s been growing to the eternal “wonderland” it is today. However, as all things, it has changed, drastically. So, unlike the Fortnite kids of today, us that have a little more internet experience can remember some of the old knick-knacks of this miracle of human ingenuity

MSN Messenger

MSN in all its glory, remember it? It’s surprising how the transition to easy chatting took until we ended up at today’s levels. Nowadays, it’s so easy thanks to platforms like Facebook and its subsidiaries. Back then, you’d have whole chat rooms, were you’d join the room first and then talk, sort of like the in-game chats in modern titles.

Dial-Up Modems

If this wasn’t an article, right now, I would be screeching in your face. If you’re a bit younger, you might ask “WHY?”. Well, to be perfectly honest, I would be trying to replicate the horrifying sound of the old Internet. Back in the day, these fancy new modems didn’t exist, and before broadband was widespread, to connect to the internet, normally, one would have to use a generic telephone line to connect to the ISP, however, the modem would detail this process by producing sound frequencies according to the connection and it was this sound that will always remain in our minds, stamped as a reminder of the 90s and early 2000s.

Myspace

Myspace still exists, but it’s far from the days of its glory. Originally, Myspace was a website designed for the circulation of a network of blogs and accounts, a sort of beta Facebook if you please. In most of the late 00s, Myspace was the largest social media site, designed to share the vast array of files, images, music and videos put forward by the large contingent of users it shared. By 2009, Facebook had passed it by amount of unique users in the US, signalling the beginning of its decline. To this day, we can say that Myspace is a fallen titan of the social media world.

Yahoo!

Ok, to be honest, Yahoo! Is still around, but come on, when was the last time you saw someone use Yahoo!? This doesn’t just need to be about Yahoo!, but other search engines in general, that have since fallen prey to Google’s popularity. Does anyone remember “Ask Jeeves?”? Or even “Ask.com”?

Ladies and Gentlemen, we’re on the final straight. This is Part 3 of our “A year that won’t disappoint” series. We’ve already seen the bustling schedules of 8 exhilarating months. Now, we shall explore the final part of 2019, let’s see what awaits…

September, a healthy mix-match.

It’s a banger straight away for this one. Releasing on September 6th, is “It: Chapter Two”. 2017’s “It” only told the first part of Stephen King’s original novel. This next chapter, tells the latter part, when the characters are now adults after their first encounter with the monster. For the classical lovers, “Downton Abbey” premieres in September. This spin-off film is made by the original creator of the famous British show depicting the life of aristocrats, most of the original stars reprise their roles. Another film coming out in September will be the sequel of “The Angry Birds Movie”.

October, comics really are doing something to society…

Yet again, the most important release is a comic-book movie. This time however, it’s special. “Joker” will release on October 4th. Joaquin Phoenix will star as the “Clown Prince of Crime” with this new interpretation of the character. Many are hopeful that this interpretation will be a perfect homage to past works from the likes of Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholson. A reboot of the old “The Adams Family” will also release and another classic will take form. This is one for the elders as Tom Hanks will unveil to us the story of “Mr Rodgers’ Neighbourhood”, a heart-warming American children’s classic series.

“Charlie’s Angels” Reboot Cast

November, he said he’ll be back, and she said she’ll let it go…

We’re getting carried away with the phrases, but who cares? We love saying them again and again. November immediately starts off well with the next untitled “Terminator” reboot project. “Deadpool” director Tim Miller will take the reins here with the mighty Austrian Governor returning. “Charlie’s Angels” will get a modern reboot in November and another action pick will come in the form of “Kingsman 3”, which is reported to be director Matthew Vaughn’s closing of the saga, featuring the return of Taron Egerton and Colin Firth in their roles. “Sonic the Hedgehog” will premiere on the 15th of November. Until now, fan speculation hasn’t been that positive, hopefully the franchise will create a strong cinematic entry to please fans. November will close off with the return of one of the largest pop culture phenomena of the 2010s, Disney’s “Frozen 2”. With the original directorial team, and cast returning, this will surely be yet another money-maker for Disney in 2019.

December, and to top it all off…

December doesn’t have a lot of movies coming out, but don’t let that despair you… “Jumanji 2” will enter cinemas on the 13th as a sequel to the popular initial release in the franchise reboot. Little is known about it, however all directorial and main cast players are deemed to return to this sequel. The big one to end the year will be “Star Wars: Episode IX”. “The Last Jedi” can be summed up in relative terms as a fanbase disaster. Although financially stable as a project, most fan reception of the film was extremely devastating to the franchise, which has been in a slump ever since, and the responses from Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and “The Last Jedi” director Rian Johnson have not helped. However, this time, acclaimed actor J.J. Abrams will return to direct what hopefully will be a fitting end to the sequel trilogy of what arguably is the greatest franchise of all time.

There we have it, we’re done and we’re finished. 2019 is definitely going to be one heck of a blast. If you’re looking forward to it like us, then you’re definitely doing something right. This has been a brief series to analyse next year’s goodies, of course there will be more niche releases coming that may cater to finer tastes and for us at 1-Up Club, it’s always something interesting to hear about. In 2019, 1-Up will be ever present in Malta’s cinema fans landscape and we’ll always have a trick up our sleeves to try and enjoy these films with you guys. In fact, on the 23rd of November, we’ll be going to watch “Aquaman”, so feel free to come and join us.

May, the endgame is upon us.

The obvious biggest opener of May is “Avengers: Endgame”, or at least it was, with new confirmation that it will be released earlier in late April, however, it will still most likely open in May at most cinemas. This release will most likely end the story of the current form of the Avengers, leading to the culmination of a six year journey for movie-goers. “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu” will also release in May, starring Ryan Reynolds as the voice of Pikachu. May will also mark the release of the live-action remake of “Aladdin”, adding to Disney’s nostalgia barge in 2019. John Wick: Chapter 3 and Gozilla: King of the Monsters will also release.

June, speaking of Disney’s nostalgia bar…

Pixar is back!! June marks the release of “Toy Story 4”, which will most likely mark the end of this fan-favorite saga. Also on the animations side will be the release of “Secret Life of Pets 2”, a sequel to the original outlook on the pets world from Illumination Entertainment. June will also give us the release of the new Men in Black Spinoff, together with an intriguing biopic called “Ford vs Ferrari” which describes the story of how Ford challenged the mighty Ferrari in the legendary 24 hours Le Mans.

July, Hakuna Matata!

You already know whats coming with that phrase. Yes, its the remake of “The Lion King”, probably the most anticipated of the live-action Disney remakes. This movie will bless us with its royal release on the 19th of July. Spiderman will also return in July, marking it in “Spiderman: Far from Home”. This will continue to add to the successful reboot of the character from Marvel’s side.

August, one for book-lovers.

There isn’t much going on in August, however, a film will be released based upon the novel series “Artemis Fowl”, featuring a strong directorial and actors combo already proven in “Murder on the Orient Express”. “Grudge” will also release, based upon a loved Japanese horror.

And that concludes Part Two! Stay tuned next week as we continue this journey into the future, to see what goodies await for us film lovers!

We’re in December, which means that 2019 is almost with us. If we reflect a little bit on the year that has just passed, we can’t deny the fact that it has indeed been a wonderful year when it comes to blockbuster films. From ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ to ‘Ready Player One’ to ‘The Incredibles Two’, the list goes on… So why not in this case, we also see what’s coming up in the coming year? Here at 1-Up, a large part of our contingent are massive movie fans, and a lot of our events are based on these movies, so let’s indulge in what we think would be the most awesome!

Let’s start from the beginning, January.

There isn’t much coming up in the first month of next year. Of note, there is ‘Glass’, a new superpowers movie featuring Samuel L. Jackson, James McAvoy and Bruce Willis. Jackson will be returning as his popular character ‘Mr Glass’ from the earlier movie ‘Unbreakable’. M. Night Shyamalan’s direction will surely make this crossover with his other film ‘Split’ interesting. Another featured film coming out in January will be ‘Serenity’, a thriller featuring Academy Award winners Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway.

February, 2019’s first month of animation prowess.

We’re starting to up the ante here. Two major animated sequels are coming out in this month. First, ‘The Lego Movie 2’ will be upon us. The first movie was a blast featuring a solid cast and an interesting animation style featuring stop-motion and CGI, this time featuring space invaders. Next, we get the third instalment in the ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ series. These will both surely sweeten up the cold month of February.

March, when Disney comes knocking.

Its March when Disney really gets going. Not only do we get ‘Captain Marvel’, Brie Larson’s anticipated entry into the MCU, but we get the first of Disney’s live-action remakes of 2019, ‘Dumbo’. With Tim Burton leading, the remake is sure to turn some heads with a sweet sense of nostalgia for those who grew-up watching the Disney classics. Meanwhile, ‘Captain Marvel’ will start to unfold more into the story of a new superhero, a character which seemingly will have a massive impact into the conclusion of ‘Avengers’. Apart from these, Tom Hanks will star in a new war thriller called ‘Greyhound’, based on the stories of the Atlantic convoys of WW2.

April, DC’s comeback?

‘Shazam!’ is the most noteworthy movie of April 2019. This may be another strong push from DC to elevate their lackluster superhero movie universe. Till now, the movie adaptation seems to be exciting, maybe it will add to the stellar effort brought up by ‘Wonder Woman’. Another two movies of note in April, are the new reboot of ‘Hellboy’, directed by Neil Marshall and ‘Pet Semetary’, another novel adaptation of a Stephen King work.

For now, I’ll leave it at that. We’ve just covered the first four months, and already, we’ve seen some exciting prospects. 2019 surely will provide us with plenty to be excited about, but allow me to cut in for a moment to remind us that we’re still in 2018. In fact, there’s still another major movie coming out, ‘Aquaman’, and here at 1-Up Club, we’re excited for it, so much in fact, that we’ll soon be organizing an event to unite all fans, and go see the movie together! Stay tuned on our Facebook page for more info. In the coming articles, we’ll continue exploring the next months of 2019, to see what movie and popcorn goodness awaits us!
