I’m guessing you may be wondering, who is generation Y? Let me break it down for you: generation Y are the "mellenials’, the cool kids born from the late 80’s up to the year 2000.

So guess what? You are probably a part of generation Y. The twenty-something age groups all make up a part of this so-called generation and you may be questioning, why should this interest you? So, you are a millennial and you probably love to travel right?

No, I am no psychic, but recent research has proved that those travelers born between 1980’s and the year 2000 (Generation Y) represent the most ever-changing target market in the travel and tourism industry. This means that their tastes and preferences are harder to keep track of. Statistics show that the majority of people forming part of the generation Y do not have full time jobs and 40% of their time is "free time’. Moreover they manage to fill this free time as they have a passion for traveling, are wanderers, are seeking new experiences and in ten years’ time, they will be the segment of society which spends the most on traveling.

Furthermore, generation Y’s buying behavior will be one that is very quick when it comes to planning a holiday, and this means that there can be a longer period of time to plan and book ahead. This can pose a threat on the hotel business as their prices are set in accordance to the demand mechanism and if the demand is relatively low prior to the holiday, the price will be much cheaper. Moreover, platforms such as couch surfing will get more and more popular with this segment. New studies also show that the trend for the travel and tourism industry is to promote place authenticity; this is due to the fact that travelers are looking for a more local experience. This corroborates with the fact that people are opting to couch surf in order to stay local and get the local ambiance vibe.

Hence, it is of utmost importance for the industry to keep researching the market, as it is a very dynamic one. Doing this enables stakeholders to provide the necessary supply for the posed demand of the travelers.

Have you ever wondered whether our ancestors were any different from us?  Well, they definitely were! The gap in the era between the previous generation and the present generation speaks for itself. So is this generation all doom and gloom or is it all rainbows and butterflies?!…Wrong. It’s neither. One cannot pick a side, but rather state the fact that the present generation is truly and utterly different. Or is it?

1.   WE ARE BUSY 24/7 — Let’s face it, this era has become so busy that we do not have the time for knitting, sewing or watching too much TV. We are so caught up in our daily routines of school, work & our social life that we tend to have little spare time left.

2.   ONLINE SHOPPING SAVED OUR LIVES — If it wasn’t for this genius idea, we would be terribly dressed once we’re caught up in assignments and exam period.

3.   ASKING YOUR NEIGHBOUR TO SIT AND TALK ON A WOODEN CHAIR IS NOW WEIRD — Do you remember your grandma sitting outside after 8pm talking to the neighbours? Try doing that now, they would probably think you have gone bonkers!

4.   MATERIALISM, WHAT MATERIALISM? –   Let’s all confess this now, we have become more concerned with cool brands that we own; who wouldn’t like to own a fancy Audi R8? Or the latest limited edition of Rolex? How about owning the cutest polo shirt with the Jockey on the far right? Well no one ever refused a Ralph Lauren.

5.   ANTI-SOCIALISM IS THE NEW THING – We have improved our smart phones and increased our lack of interest in learning about different people by getting to know them face-to-face, by socialising. You do not ask a girl out in a romantic setting. No, you now Facebook her a message or two. You like his photo on Facebook but then don’t smile back when you come across him on Quad. Geez, anti-social much?

6.   NO HUSBAND? NO PROBLEM. — Modern times show that a woman doesn’t need a man to prove she is worthy, hard working or loyal. Woman can build a career without the help of a man to make her feel that she can do it.

7.  STUDYING IS A NIGHTMARE — School curriculums have become so much harder and too complex to keep up with. Primary students learn things that twenty year olds never did until secondary school – it’s just a WTF moment really.

8.  DEGREES ARE PEANUTS   – In the working world, having a degree does not make you look smarter unlike around twenty years ago, where it sort of did. More people are reading for degrees and so, Masters and PHD’s give a unique edge to potential employees. This utterly means that this generation is getting smarter in terms of qualifications.

9.   WE’RE GROWING UP WAY TOO FAST — Currently, teenagers are growing up from a very young age! A twelve-year-old with an iPhone has become the norm. My hobbies as a twelve-year-old were showing off my cool new scooter and playing in the streets.

How do you get to Know People by the Comments they Pass? https://thirdeyemalta.com/how-do-you-get-to-know-people-by-the-comments-they-pass/ Sat, 12 Sep 2015 15:34:00 +0000 https://thirdeyemalta.com/?p=357 We have found ourselves living in a world where people are more concerned with how they look and with their latest purchase from the Mac store rather than looking for what has true meaning in life.

Have you ever really thought about the saying, ‘what Susan says of Sally says more about Susan than of Sally’? Without any prior consideration, some people just utter words from their mouth irrelevant of the consequences they might have. In reality, if someone is gullible enough not to think beyond a comment someone passes, they are definitely at a disadvantage.

Clearly, how one expresses himself shows a lot about the person he or she truly is. Their body language towards others and how they treat others verbally and non-verbally highly shadows their character. Every day I find myself observing how certain people talk about others; some speak highly about the people around them whilst others do the exact opposite. In the latter case, my mind ignited with thoughts of how they would actually speak of me. Should I trust them? Are they loyal enough?

We have found ourselves living in a world where people are more concerned with how they look and with their latest purchase from the Mac store rather than looking for what has true meaning in life. The values of kindness, loyalty and respect towards others are a rare sight these days. It’s a pity that some think that if you have a university degree you are educated… do not be mistaken. A degree does not make someone smart, as some people are proof of the saying ‘ignorance is bliss’.  People choose not to care nor to act as if they do, which is a pity because giving is the best thing one can ever undertake in life.

“So be kind, because everyone is fighting a hard battle” (Plato).

Next time, think before you speak.
