Last Friday, March 18th 2016, Pulse published a note on their Facebook page entitled Pulse In Favour Of Modern Student Politics. This claims that for the past 19 years, Pulse has strictly focused on the student body.

Despite this, Pulse has decided not to contest this year’s KSU election (2016/2017 term).   Although at the moment I am still unsure of what Pulse’s tactic is, when I read their note, I felt that Pulse was justifying their decision by putting forward the hard work done this year.

This year Pulse has brilliantly focused on their Policy Forum.   In the organisation’s policies, Pulse discussed many issues ranging from the student’s reaction to Budget 16, social inclusion –   a very detrimental issue in our society – and even hosted an International Youth Debate on migration.

In my honest opinion, change has been needed for a very long time. KSU elections have become a popularity contest, rather than focusing on student-centred issues. But will change occur?

I think this year Pulse had an opportunity to change this. However, instead of competing against SDM, they are escaping from the competition and, in the process, are increasing what has been a huge problem in the past years; student apathy. However, I do agree that at a point one has to reevaluate one’s options and opt to not spend a huge amount of money on student elections and focus resources on other, more important, issues.

Now that Pulse are not contesting the election, SDM has the duty to present candidates that will work together for the students. The popularity aspect does not count anymore.

Today, Terra Di Mezzo (TDM) 2000 Malta launched The TDM Hands (and Paws) On. This initiative is intended to aid and support a local institution.

In previous years, they have helped raise awareness and collect funds for equipment of facilities. Just last year they managed to collect €10,000 for The Hospice Movement, Angela House and Dar San Guzepp.

This year they will be tackling another local institution that is SOS Malta, K9 Unit, Search and Rescue in the hope of supporting training of the Rescue Dogs and buying equipment for rescue.

The President of the organization, Mr Duncan Muscat, explained briefly the idea, which is to meet with the volunteers who are very dedicated in training the dogs.

Also, Matthew Thomas Carbonaro gave an idea about this campaign, which promotes the principles of the Rescue team’s work.

Volunteers from the canine unit were present and also puppies, which are beginning the training process at the moment. One of the volunteers explained in great detail what training is used and how this training is taught to these dogs.

The puppies present were only of 5 months of age yet, they have already begun the process of positive training. This training helps the dogs associate an object and its permanence. Later on, they become aware of this object and learn to associate with it items such as a human beings belongings.

As explained, this is not an easy process; in fact, it takes 3 years to train the dogs and 3 years for the handler as well. They are capable to do so since their olfactory sense is much better than that of humans and also that they have a much more stable balance than that of us humans.

A case mentioned by the volunteer involved a situation where a man went missing in a hotel and the dog was given a possession of the missing man to sniff. After this, the dog began to create a trail in aid for the police to search

Hon. Chris Agius who is the Parliamentary Secretary for Research, Innovation, Youth and Sport was present and mentioned how important voluntary work is even more in today’s society.

It is important for youths to lead on into this kind of optional work. Not only does it help us enhance our knowledge but also creates awareness in many sectors of voluntary help.

Live and Help Live https://thirdeyemalta.com/live-and-help-live/ Tue, 23 Feb 2016 18:02:00 +0000 https://thirdeyemalta.com/?p=484 Is it possible that we live in a society that preaches for the public to respect one another and to always keep a broad mentality yet maltreatment occurs so commonly?

As it seems that we are living in a civilization that is always expanding and evolving, I am still in utter shock when I witness certain actions in my personal daily life. Is it possible that we live in a society that preaches for the public to respect one another and to always keep a broad mentality yet maltreatment occurs so commonly?

How can someone be even labeled non-judgmental when they treat struggling human beings just like themselves with a mediocre laugh rather than lending a helping hand? Why is it so hard for us to help someone in need rather than make a joke with our friends to have a laugh and seem cool or even submit to peer pressure?

By the use  of the word struggling I am referring to humans who in their life have issues whatever they may be, whether it is mentally or physically.   Even just by being nervous or insecure, which for some may be something very common but for others it may effect their know how of life.

Our brain must function in a manner that we act supportive and obliged even when we do not feel like it. Have you ever wondered whether others feel like it all the time? I assure you they do since for them it may be permanent or seem permanent for life.

Ask this question to yourself…would you want your child to be treated with this mentality? If you ever had anyone mistreat someone very close to you, wouldn’t you want people to help them rather than make them feel miserable and making them stay behind closed doors feeling invisible?

As a society, we find it easier to accomplish a good deed only when one is gaining something in return rather than just executing it for the sake of treating someone like a proper deserving human being

Is it possible that life has become so hectic that we have lost such a vital value? The routine system in our daily life has caused such a loss.

All of this is just generally speaking without accusing no one, because there are so many kind human beings who dedicate as much as they can to aid others who do not have the luxury maybe to walk, speak, move and so much more!

If I had an issue with interaction, all I would need is a little push from someone of the same age as mine to help me create a conversation. It’s these small gestures that will create a much more morally healthy environment.

Everyone has their own priorities and issues that take much of their time but if a mentality where one puts others before him is adapted in your own life, think of how much more it would be for someone in difficulty.

Car Pooling Initiative: Fewer Congested Roads, Fewer Parking Problems https://thirdeyemalta.com/car-pooling-initiative-fewer-congested-roads-fewer-parking-problems/ Tue, 02 Feb 2016 17:53:00 +0000 https://thirdeyemalta.com/?p=470 The pilot initiative introduced this morning by the Kunsill Studenti Universitarji (KSU) concerns a method of promoting car-pooling amongst University students.

The pilot initiative introduced this morning by the Kunsill Studenti Universitarji (KSU) concerns a method of promoting car-pooling amongst University students. This encourages one driver to have as much as 4 passengers in one car, hence reducing 4 more cars on the road.

Its use has been recommended and supported in Malta for a very long time since traffic is daily issue for any driver on Maltese roads.

Car park 4 (near quad) will be strictly reserved from 7 a.m. till 1 p.m. for those students taking part in this initiative. The security guard will be making sure that those who enter this area are 1 driver with 2  or more passengers, both holding 2 valid parking permits — being that of the driver and of the respective passengers.

This strategy is an effort to try and deviate from the increasing problem of traffic on our roads and from the grave issue of parking at University, where students have to either wait for someone to leave or park in another place which is not on University grounds.

This shall hopefully aid beat the problem whilst keeping in mind that it is still a pilot project being introduced for the next 2 months. I have already seen various posts by University students on social media judging this system — yet, I suggest we all wait to see the progress before coming to our own conclusions.

Others have already posted in University groups offering to start making use of this system.  As announced by the KSU Facebook page:

Our main aim is to instigate a change in mentality – KSU

As a council, KSU has always tried to invent new concepts and tried different systems with regard to this parking issue. One might consider that what actually needs a change is the student’s mentality on car-pooling.

Many will still prefer their own car obviously, but why rub salt to the wound? Why not try to cooperate with each other and solve an issue which has been causing problems for a very long time?

This system will commence as from tomorrow.

How Far will Exams Take You? https://thirdeyemalta.com/how-far-will-exams-take-you/ Sat, 30 Jan 2016 14:54:00 +0000 https://thirdeyemalta.com/?p=468 Yes, you are studying for your future and for a subject that you will possibly have to dedicate your whole career to - yet, even if you love the subject, exams may tend to deviate you from your passion and opinions.

The word "exam’ in itself drives chilling senses down my spine. A paper determines what the light at the end of the tunnel may offer. As this past semester was my first session of University exams, I can only send a warning to others that are next in line.

DO NOT believe the myth that after A-levels the tough part is over because well, it is just the beginning.

Yes, you are studying for your future and for a subject that you will possibly have to dedicate your whole career to – yet, even if you love the subject, exams may tend to deviate you from your passion and opinions.

Sometimes the feeling of examinations creates a repetitive cycle were one exam leads to the next. Just like a domino effect creating a monotonous vibe distracting you from the light, which you are initially motivated to reach.

We are not taught on how to keep motivated and ahold of ourselves. Nowadays, movies, TV-series, books and other influencing means hold the key to motivation for many students.

Everything has a beginning and an ending. Hopefully, everyone will have the opportunity to meet that ending which he or she has been awaiting for more than 25 years of his or her life.

We exist in a world where without education, it is difficult for a person to have a bright future. There are many exceptions to the above statement but that is how companies and certain employers make you feel.

A job is not easy to get ahold of. It is a completely different dynamic of competition. Ironically sometimes it does not even matter whether you are an A+ student or a D+ student because you may all fall in the same category.

An exam can get you as far as you want to with regard to the scale of work and wage, since it declares what level you graduate in. Exams will take you as far as a certificate; the real exam is the real world.

The people you meet at work, whether it is your co-worker, a client or even your boss, are the people that will test you. Those are the people that will be tougher than exams and expecting so much more.
