Youth for the Environment Clean-Up

Today, 2 members of The Third Eye headed down to Marsaxlokk to participate in a Clean Up at it-Torri ta’ San Lucjan, a cultural heritage site which had become, unfortunately, a dumping ground. Despite the heat, a good number of youths turned up, with tons of garbage gathered throughout the morning.

When talking with Julia Farrugia, the president of Y4TE, she highlighted the importance of starting to gather awareness of this ever-growing problem from a young age. Even though the current youths had Xummiemu as an example to always clean up, there are still people who leave a mess wherever they go. Therefore, it is not only important to teach the students to recycle and throw away rubbish in the bins, but also to take them to cultural sites such as this one and show them the garbage left behind, for it will increase their awareness as to how it ruins the beauty of nature. After all, prevention is better than cure. Furthermore, when asked about how Y4TE works to encourage youths, especially university students, to help out in events like these, she insisted on the importance of making it look as appealing as possible. If they manage to convince them to come and pass through the experience even for an hour, they will surely attend future events, thus not remaining with the same niche crowd.

We at Third Eye highlight the importance of recycling, and always cleaning up; after all, we are only taking care of the world we live in.
