Psychology considers the teenage years to be a very sensitive period of time.
It is the time when boys supposedly become men and girls become women.
Probably, a good number of us experienced this change at some point or another during their stay at Junior College, whilst the rest of us were set back precisely because of those good old Junior College days which kept us young at heart till today.
Although University has kept us away from the Junior College gates for a while, we still speak about all our adventures and the memories we made and this is undoubtedly all for a reason.
1. "Joey s-Security’
Although there are multiple security personnel at University, probably only a handful of us know any of them by name. However at Junior College things were different. Joey s-Security was the popular, middle-aged security man who each day greeted Junior College students (and even intruders) with a smile and a "bongu’.
2. "Study Area’ — 1st floor
As probably most of us remember, the name of this area was quite ironic, as students in this hall barely ever did anything academic. What students did in this room varied from laughing and talking, to playing cards, leaving studying to be the least popular activity in the room.
3. The "Pulse — SDM’ saga
Pulse and SDM might be at the center of conflict for many junior college students, however it would be wise to say that Junior College would ultimately be a completely different place without these two organisations. Adding to that, a good number of those who engage in student organisations at University find their roots of passion towards student activism grounded in Pulse and SDM.
4. Election Week
In Junior College, almost every single student is bound to take a side either with Pulse or SDM. With a voting turn out that exceeds 90%, unarguably election week at Junior College is the most anticipated week of the year.
5. Public Egging
Every single Junior College student knows how this works out because probably they have experienced this first-hand. The person who’s celebrating his birthday, also known as the victim, is tied safely with the famous tree and suddenly he is transformed into a living cake.
6. Meeting everyone, every day
Junior College is completely different from University. It’s the place where one needs to make no effort to meet his friends as the area is relatively small for the number of students. Adding to that, another factor which helped to gather everyone together, was that everyone had an area synonymous to his name; "pjazza’,’canteen’, "foyer’ and so on.
7. My 16:00 lecture is cancelled!
In University absent lecturers are announced by email (or sometimes, never even announced at all), but back to the Junior College days, absent lecturers were only announced by two monitors in the foyer, to which students looked with hope and devotion.
8. The Wednesday meetings
Particularly during election times, Wednesday meetings are an absolute show, as Pulse and SDM followers, gather in different sides of foyer and sing their chants before both organisations head to two different classrooms inside Junior College to hold their meetings.
9. It’s never a wasted moment
It doesn’t matter if you have four hours of free lessons. There’s always something to do at the college. You either go to have some snack, play football at the grounds, or else you can just simply enjoy yourself chatting and wasting your time or annoying somebody.
10. It’s sad when it’s all over
At University everyone seems to be looking forward to finish his degree so that he can start earning money. It’s not the same story when one gets to leave the Junior College. Although the next step forward is exciting, leaving all those people and memories behind is not the easisest thing to do.
