Ever since Ira Losco placed second in the Eurovision Song Contest, with just 12 points away from winning the competition, the singer has been regarded as the goddess of music in Malta.
20 music awards, a concert with Claudio Baglioni, compliments from Gianni Morandi, Enrique Iglesias and Lucio Dalla, four number 1 albums, a string of chart topping singles, performances with Elton John, Katie Melua, Maroon 5, Akon, Mel C, Ronan Keating, Bob Geldof, Tokio Hotel, Gigi D`Alessio, Claudio Baglioni, Max Gazze, Sohne Mannheims, Silbermond, Duran Duran and Enrique Iglesias, songs of hers covered by Kelly Clarkson, a 90 minute DVD, and a book on the highlights from her career later, the star decided to return to the Eurovision stage.
Even though since 2002, the Maltese were always eager to see Ira again on the Eurovision stage, her victory brought different reactions. Some said that she is taking away opportunities from other singers, that her song wasn’t the best one, and that she won because of her fame. To all of those who think this way, here are some of the few reasons why you are terribly wrong in your judgements.
Like every other singer who participated in the MESC, she had the chance to win or lose. "As if Ira is going to lose’ is what probably you are thinking, and that goes to show how much she deserved to be there. Her fame is the result of the vast experience that she has in this industry, and so she, being the singer who is experienced the most, has much more to give when representing Malta in the Eurovision final. Experience is important as much as a singer’s voice and song.
One cannot look solely at the 3 minutes that Ira has on stage. Eurovision is also a matter of interviews and press-conferences, therefore the singer has to be good with the press and there is no doubt that Ira captivates the press with her charm and charisma.
The singer has a fan base all across Europe. Let’s not forget the various international concerts and gigs she participated in which were always crowded. Also, international Eurovision fans are crazy about the "7th Wonder’ singer. Upon the news that Ira won the contest yesterday, several videos were uploaded to Youtube saying that she is their favourite out of all the entrances which were announced so far. The videos describe Ira’s song as having that something special whilst being creative, fresh, modern and a definite top 5. They described the singer as having that star-factor, confidence, and a fantastic team behind her.
Despite all of this, it is nice to have an ambassador who actually stands for good causes such as anti-bulying, self-empowerment and self-worth, women’s contribution to society, animal awareness campaigns, and LGBT rights.
Really and truly, Ira has everything it takes to make us proud this May. She has a distinct personality, she is charismatic, has an international fan base, an original song that stands out, a unique voice, a good image, knows how to cheer the crowd and has a lot of experience. What more can you ask for? As Enrique Iglesias said, “she’s a true artist…the whole deal”.
On that note, The Third Eye team would like to wish Ira the best of good luck with her journey to the Eurovision. We are positive that everyone will be supporting the singer on that day and wishing Ira success – even those who aren’t recognising her international capabilities at the moment.
