Why Beach Clean-ups are more than just ‘green publicity’ | SDM

Yet another beach clean-up has been organised, this time by resident university organisation SDM.

Student organisations are nothing short of familiar with clean-ups, there having been more and more events of the sort organised each year. Now that temperatures are rising and storms are staying at bay, prepare to see more clean-ups to be organised by student organisations alike.

SDM alone had organised several clean-ups last year. However, this time around they collaborated with 12 other student organisations from the University of Malta. Whilst being great events (or ‘green stunts’) to present the host organisation as environmentally friendly and conscious of anything green, clean-ups serve a tangible good.

This Saturday’s clean-up in particular had students packing numerous garbage bags with plastic, cigarette ends and other rubbish found on Għajn Tuffieha bay. It goes without saying that the place was left in a much better state than before and the event obviously served a purpose in that sense.

However, the true utility of these clean-ups and other ‘green’ events is in the awareness that is built about the environment in the process of hosting and promoting the event. In fact, these types of events create a domino effect where more organisations and individuals do their effort to preserve the environment.
