Why a Student would Opt for the Bypass over a Subway

Following yesterday’s news that a fence was put up in Dun Karm Street, we were contacted by several people who have different opinions about this fence. Both readers and commenters explained  that they choose to cross from the bypass since it provides a shorter route to the University.

However University is not the only place students aim to get to when crossing the bypass. In fact, Medical and health students who live in Swatar need to go to Mater Dei for their studies and using the subway lengthens the route. Other points were raised saying that it’s not only students who cross from the area but also locals to get access to the bus stop and the shops close to campus.

However, the question on the mind of many  is; Why isn’t the subway being used by more people? We were told that the subway is filthy and not well lit so a lot of students who finish lectures late in the evening are scared to use the subway at night since stray dogs venture there, someone also mentioned sexual assaults taking place in the subway. In addition, the subway is known to flood in heavy rain making it difficult to use without getting soaked.

Are there any possible solutions to this problem before someone gets badly injured or killed? Clearly the subway has issues that need fixing. Some solutions that readers came up with include having proper lighting should be available during the day and night to scare off stray animals or anyone lingering in there for no good reason, adding more security cameras, fixing the flooding issue and having the path cleaned. Some also suggested to add traffic lights to the bypass or build an overpass from Swatar side to the University side.
