Wanderlust | Verona, Shakespeare and Food

’Wanderlust’ is German for "a strong desire to travel’. Ever since I was a little girl, I wondered how the world looked like at the other end of the globe and this curiosity led me to explore, find information on and even visit some breathtaking countries, finding out what’s beautiful all over the world.

When I think of Italy, I think of; pizza, spaghetti, espressos and most of all, good looking Italianos. I’ve been to Italy a couple of times and I can assure you that there’s so much more than that (even though, sadly, I haven’t seen any good looking guys when I went… All I saw was grumpy middle-aged men). My favourite place in Italy so far is Verona. If you’ve ever seen Letters to Juliet, you’ve already got some pictures in mind of what Verona looks like. Shakespeare placed star-crossed Romeo and Juliet in Verona for a good reason: romance, drama and fatal family feuds have been the city’s hallmark for centuries.

Verona is rich in archaeological sites, with a beautiful medieval centre. The Roman arena, where concerts and operas are performed in the summer, is the city’s grandest sight, but “Juliet’s balcony” is the principal point of interest for lovers of Shakespeare. The narrow streets lined with impressive medieval and Renaissance buildings are just breath taking.

The beautiful lakeside towns around Lago di Garda are just indescribable. It is interesting to know that the area was a summer resort area for the ancient Romans, and in Sirmione and Desenzano you can visit the ruins and mosaics that record their presence. I also recommend trying the impeccable gelato which is made on the premises, with flavours like baciobianco (white chocolate and hazelnut), candied orange with cinnamon, and mille fiori. Now that makes me hungry… Again!

The city is surrounded by a wall that used to protect it during times of war. One of the most popular attractions in the city is Juliet’s house. In front of the house, there is a statue of Juliet, accompanied by a legend that says that if you’ll touch Juliet’s… Well, let’s just say, that if you touch Juliet in the right spot, good fortune will come your way. The courtyard’s notes are filled with written notes from people to their special loved one.

There’s something mysterious in Verona that will instantly make you fall in love with the place.
