UoM Performing Arts students appeal for the practice of professionalism

An article published on newspaper Times of Malta’s online portal on Wednesday the 16th of November 2016, reports that: "Theatre board member quits over new CEO’, in reference to the resignation of the Teatru Manoel’s board member Ms Pia Zammit. It highlighted the issue of recruiting professionals in the arts sector.

The University Students of Performing Arts Association (USPA)’s intention is not to go into the merits of individual cases that appear in the media. Nevertheless, the importance of professionalism and competence concerns students following performing arts courses at the University of Malta. A portion of students obtain their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees each year, with the aspiration of finding careers within the culture and arts sector in Malta.

The current positive investment in the cultural sector by Government and upcoming major events such as the European Capital of Culture Valletta 2018, offer an ideal platform for students to develop a career out of this significantly pivotal sector to Malta’s economy and development.

To this end, USPA appeals to employers in the sector to employ individuals who have specialised and continue to specialise in the arts, and who will therefore complement the management and development of already existing structures.
