Local bands, unfortunately, are not given the spotlight that they deserve in our culture, especially bands that have just started, or others comprised of young teenagers full of innovation, energy, and an eye for inspiration. This has not affected The Busker, a band which has been active for the past two years.
The Busker, made up of Dario Genovese, Jean Paul Borg, David Grech, and new addition Luca Spiteri, have a bright future ahead of them as they are getting ready to pack their bags and instruments and head off to the UK, to chase their dream of finding their place in music. An interesting mix of 1960’s pop and rock with folk and rock, the band have recently launched their third EP, EP3, as well as playing several gigs over the last couple of years, most notably including the KSJC Summer Bash and at Earth Garden, opening for the popular Maltese band Tribali.
However, on the 31st of August, The Busker literally took to the road with an hour long gig, with a small difference; their last gig before moving to the UK took place on a bus which stopped at different spots around Malta. Featuring an acoustic sets with several of their original material as well as some covers, the bands included saxophonist Sean Meachen, the singer Leona Farrugia from Cryptic Street – another local band made up of 5 teenage girls who were awarded a Bay Award this year, as well as appearances from Julia Abela and Rebecca Mifsud. Cramming around 40 people and the band on one of the old Maltese buses was not easy, but surely enjoyable for the audience, with their mode of transport decorated with tie-dyed cloths and pieces of paper reading parts of their lyrics; all the works of the band.
The Busker is a true example of how far people would chase their dream. We would like to wish them all the luck on their trip to the UK and hope that all that they work hard for will result in success.
