Looking forward to work alongside with the new team, a capable and dynamic one. This is a team that will aid me in leading SDM with a different perspective. This will be achieved thanks to the new ideas the new members will be bringing with them. I am looking forward to not only work with the University Executive but also with the new Junior College Executive. Apart from this, I am ready to listen to anyone who has new ideas, and ready to work with anyone who gives priority to students. I am confident that if we work together throughout the year, this will lead to positive results.

And here is what the former president, Keith Grima, had to say;

After over 7 years of hard work, my time at SDM has come to an end and I am very proud of all that we have been able to achieve together. It has been a truly memorable journey but now it’s time to move on to other things. Firstly, I would like to thank all students who supported me throughout this time. I would also like to thank all SDM members, candidates and friends who’ve been part of executive teams with me; you have taught me everything I know and I owe all of this to you. I would also like to thank my family for understanding how busy I was and for supporting me no matter what. Lastly, I would like to thank my girlfriend Sarah for always having my back. Thank you SDM. The experiences, the memories and the friendships will surely stay with me forever.

The Third Eye wishes the best of luck to the new executive!

No need to long for festivities far from home. This Christmas season, campus has got you covered with everything from wine tasting, to karaoke to a make-shift Christmas market on quad. This week is full to the brim with activities that will leave no Grinch in sight.

Wine and Dine on Quad

Trash your lunch plans and don’t worry about going too far. Even if you’ve only got 5 minutes between lectures, your student organisations have got you covered. The comfort food suppliers are as follows: SDM (burgers), USPA (sandwiches), IEEE (pastizzi), UM Futsal (tuna panini), UM Racing (rice dishes).

After a long day of lectures wash all that down with some wine from Common Room during a wine-tasting taking place throughout Monday and Tuesday.

Sweets and L-Istrina

Whether you’ve got a sweet tooth that needs appeasing or a thirst to do good – no need to take a step off campus. Your gift of giving can start from the second you find a parking spot.

In order to park on campus today you’ll need a wristband which you can get by donating €1 (ideally a day before!) Once you’re settled, feel free to stop by the student organisations’ on Quad to devour brownies, cakes or cookies to your heart’s delight.

Carols and Karaoke

This year KSU made it a point to go beyond the usual idea of a Christmas Market on quad. Whether you want to show off your vocals (even if it’s after a few drinks) or you’re looking to vibe to some Christmas carols – you don’t need to go any further than right outside your lecture hall.

KSU is holding a concert on Wednesday at 1:00PM and on Friday at 12:00PM you can enjoy some classic jingles along with some classic treats like mulled wine, and roasted chestnuts. For the vocalists, or just the extroverted, Thursday you have the chance to practice your karaoke skills.

This is the GUG‘s rundown of the STUDENT-RELATED initiatives from the 2019 Budget, Maltese and Gozitan alike.

Stipend Increase + Free Public Transport

An increase in students’ stipends is going to benefit all students. This will help cover the expenses that students have in pursuing their education. From next year, 14 and 15 year olds along with full-time students above 20 years old, will enjoy a free public transport. So, students who commute by bus will save more money in this regard. That said, however, ideally the means of public transport would be improved as well to be made more accessible and reliable.

Free Exams

Another major announcement was that MATSEC and SEC exams are to be free, as of next year. This is a major step ahead towards the improvement of the education sector in the Maltese islands. The MATSEC and SEC exams will no longer be a financial toll for some students and their families who find it difficult to pay for these exams.

Increase in Gozitan Students’ Grant

As a Gozitan student organization, GUG believes that an increase in the subsidy given to Gozitan students residing in Malta help to cover some of the expenses incurred, particularly that of accommodation. This is possible under certain conditions. The GUG organization wished to also see more about the Gozo University Campus budget, since it has been a while that a refurbishment was mentioned. If this campus is to be used, the environment needs to be an adequate and suitable one.

The GUG organization thinks that the 2019 Budget has improved the education sector along with the student’s quality of living. Investing in the student’s well-being will also benefit the state in the near future.
