The UM Wolves RFC men’s team made history on Sunday, April 2nd, by securing their first competitive wins over Overseas RUFC. The Pack managed to claim two victories during this season’s MRFU 7s series, securing them second place in the league standings for the day. They won 26-15 and 22-17 against Overseas RUFC.

The star player of the match was 18-year-old Tyrese Hayman, who scored four tries across four matches. In addition to Hayman’s impressive performance, Damian Mifsud and Virain Hariramani scored three and two tries respectively. UM Wolves captain Gabriel Seychell, along with club veterans Kurt Aquilina and Marco Gauci, also scored a try each.

Although the team suffered two identical 26-10 defeats to Kavallieri RFC, their wins against Overseas were a significant milestone in the club’s short history. The results also provided a solid foundation for the remaining four weekends of the MRFU 7s Series until the end of the season.

It’s worth noting that the UM Wolves RFC is a student-based rugby club that represents Malta in domestic competition. Furthermore, it’s the only sporting organization in the University of Malta to have a women’s team in official competition. This achievement marks the senior men’s second season in Malta’s only domestic rugby union league.

The club shared that the win was “an important moment in our club’s history which vindicates all the work that has been put in by everyone in the past five and a half years“. The club promised that they’re only getting started!

In a special launch event held last week, Wolves RFC Malta revealed a new brand and club logo which will be the image for the rugby club for the years to come.

The new logo, which comes in the club’s third season of existence, brings a more minimalist principle of design to the club while still keeping in mind the key components of the club’s brand – those being the colour green and, of course, the wolf itself.

Wolves RFC Malta President Francesco Pace Parascandalo described the launch as a significant part of the club’s history, noting that “it signifies another step forward in the right direction” for the club.

“Carrying out a full rebrand is no joke, and it is a process that has been ongoing since last November, but we think that with this new image the club is better positioned to appeal to everyone – young and old – and continue to attract more people and support”.

On the occasion of the launch, the club also revealed the brand new kits which its Women’s Team will be wearing in its debut season competing in the Malta Rugby Football Union’s Women’s Sevens League.

Wolves RFC Malta Public Relations Officer Giuseppe Attard, who spear-headed the rebranding process, explained the process undertaken to reach the final result, showing various proposed logos for the club and the changes which led to the choice of the new logo.

He said that the minimalist style of the logo and the brand as a whole, along with the altered colour palette, will give the club a more modern image which will give renewed impetus to the club.

Wolves RFC Malta Team Manager Albert Galea called the rebranding a “key moment and a significant starting point for our exciting long term vision which will see the continued development of this club.”

Pace Parascandalo also announced that the club, after successfully obtaining recognition by the University of Malta’s Senate, is currently in the process of seeking closer ties with the University of Malta.

These ties will be reflected in the club’s name in the near future, and the club will be supported by the University through various means such as financial and promotional support. Discussions will continue, with the club looking to secure long term ties with the University.

Finally, the club thanked its sponsors APS Bank and Farsons through the Blue Label Ale brand for their continued support to the club.

About the Club

Established in October 2017 with the aim of bringing the sport of rugby union back to the University of Malta, and of fostering a sporting culture on campus.

Recognised by the University of Malta’s Senate, the club fields both a men’s team and a women’s team – making it the only student organisation to have a women’s team representing the University in any sport. The club continually accepts interested persons – both male and female – who would like to join and try the sport.

All those interested in joining can either message the club on Facebook at Wolves RFC Malta, or send an email to teammanager.wolves@gmail.com. No rugby experience whatsoever is required!
