The University of Malta recently held an exciting Sports Week, organized by Kunsill Studenti Universitarji (KSU) and the Malta University Sports Association (MUSA).

The event brought students together to take part in different sports activities, meet new people, and learn more about student life on campus.

Sports Week was a big success, welcoming both experienced athletes and students who just wanted to have fun and stay active. It was also a great chance to learn about MUSA’s mission and the role of student activism in improving university life.

MUSA’s president Luke Aras explained that while Sports Week has taken place before, this year’s collaboration with KSU made it even better, “This was the best edition yet. It encouraged students to participate in sports while also sparking important conversations about student involvement,” he said.

The event also proved that students are still eager to take part in university activities.

It was pointed out from organisers that “many who attended just to watch ended up fully joining in,” showing that there is a lot of potential for student engagement with the right opportunities.

For MUSA, student activism is important because it helps student-athletes balance their education and sports without having to sacrifice one for the other.

“This level of interest shows that students care about improving sports in Malta and making sure athletes get the support they need,” MUSA stated.

The success of this event is part of a bigger trend where students are becoming more active in shaping their university experience. By working together, student organizations like KSU and MUSA are helping to build a more engaging and supportive campus environment.

If you missed out on the fun this time, don’t worry—there’s always next year!

Sabrina Zammit and Rebecca Darmanin, graduates of the University of Essex, are bringing attention to an issue involving the University of Malta’s Faculty of Laws, for what they perceive as unfair treatment.

The students, along with other graduates who began their legal studies before 2021, are experiencing struggles when trying to further their education in Malta. Despite having earned their degrees from University of Essex, they are now being told that additional requirements are necessary, contrary to what had been agreed on previously.

The Faculty of Laws is insisting on students requiring advanced A-levels in Maltese and English, as well as Intermediate certificates, for enrollment in the Master of Advocacy and Master’s in Notarial Studies. The students had previously been assured by the University’s rector, Alfred J. Vella, that they would have the possibility to sit for any needed additional study units, in order to ensure nothing is missing in their education received and to be pursue their studies seamlessly.

The students argue that now requiring the A-levels and Intermediate certificates doesn’t align with what was previously agreed upon, and doesn’t value the education they have received so far. They emphasize that considering their degrees are recognized in Malta as MQF Level 6, they should be able to be able to continue the Master’s program as initially stated.

The situation has escalated to a point where even the Maltese government is aware of the issue, nevertheless, no solutions have been put forward.

Since the Master’s program is a necessary step towards acquiring a legal warrant, the students are insisting on answers from those involved in the matter. They argue that they should not be penalized for pursuing their education abroad, and shouldn’t be going through obstacles based on outdated requirements.

A Maltese journalist, Christoph Schwaiger, has made waves in Germany by winning the inaugural Potsdam Reporter Slam. His presentation which focused on the disinformation and hatred campaigns targeting the journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia caught the attention of an international audience, and led him to winning their first ever competition.

Schwaiger competed against journalists from Italy, Bulgaria, Ukraine, and other countries. He chose to highlight important moments where Caruana Galizia was targeted during her career, including when the Labour Party in Malta used her face on billboards during the general elections.

Once he won after the final round, Schwaiger shared his thoughts;

“I’m honoured to have had the opportunity to present parts of Daphne Caruana Galizia’s life that may have not been as extensively covered outside of Malta. When I listened to my own presentation it felt surreal that one woman could be the target of so much government-sanctioned hate in an EU member state. The audience was equally as shocked.”

The win serves both as a testament to Schwaiger’s talent and dedication, as well as a recognition of the importance of Caruana Galizia’s work. The co-founder of Headliner, Jochen Markett says “We’re happy that a journalist from Malta won the first edition of our Reporter Slam in Potsdam, with such a strong story about Daphne as we approach the anniversary of her murder.”

The Reporter Slam aims to increase trust in the media and bring journalists closer to their audience, and so highlighting the case of Caruana Galizia could work towards this.

Schwaiger went on to perform in front of an audience of senior journalists and media constultants from various countries. He will next take part in a competition in Berlin, Germany, hosted at the beginning of 2025. In this competition, Schwaiger will compete against journalists who have won other competitions across Germany.

A group of student representatives at University of Malta has successfully negotiated lower prices for Adobe Creative Cloud (CC) software. This was led by Kris Bajada, a student representative on the UM Council and Chairperson of Vuci Kollettiva, whose aim is to ease the financial burden on students who rely on Adobe software for their studies. Faculty representatives and representatives from SACES, MKSA, KSU and The Third Eye were also involved in this initiative.

Up until now, a one-year subscription to Adobe CC cost €238.66 for the first year, going up to €431.78 in following years. The student representatives want to ease the challenges this posed for students, and successfully proposed a solution to make the software more affordable. The solution put forward involves the University of Malta buying 100 student licences and offering them at a discounted rate. This way, the university has been able to offer these licences to students for just €85 per year, meaning a 65% reduction.

Achieving this compromise between the students and the University shows that when students work together and the university supports them, positive changes can happen. Kris Bajada expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “This is a victory for students across all faculties. It demonstrates the power of collective action and the university’s commitment to supporting its students in their academic pursuits.”

KSU understands the struggle first-time buyers experience when looking for their home. There’s lots to look into, terms to familiarise yourself with, and unfortunately, too much paperwork.

To try and make this process easier, KSU has officially published a guide to finding a home. Settling In | A Student Guide to Housing has been published by the Social Policy Office, including advice, tips, and more information that can be useful. It covers everything from the history of Maltese housing, properly evaluating property pricing, government housing, and even the process of getting a bank loan. The many different areas make it useful for anyone looking to buy or rent, not just students or first-time buyers.

With this free booklet, owning or renting property can seem a bit more realistic. KSU says this is their way of trying to lessen the struggle that students experience when stepping into the housing market.

KSU’s social policy officer, Matthew Azzopardi, highlights that politicians often bring up the problem of affordable housing in Malta, but rarely come forward with a solution. Matthew Azzopardi says “this document is by students and for students, let us build a future here in Malta which we can be proud of!”

Sexual Health Awareness: STIs and STDs https://thirdeyemalta.com/sexual-health-awareness-stis-and-stds/ Wed, 01 May 2024 11:00:00 +0000 https://thirdeyemalta.com/?p=13084 STIs, STDs, what are their differences? STIs, STDs, what are their differences?

In the medical community, there’s a general understanding that STI and STD are just two acronyms for the same thing. However, the word ‘disease’ refers to a medical issue with clear symptoms, which can be misleading since not all STDs have noticeable signs or symptoms and can often go undetected.

Medical professionals now prefer the newer term ‘STI’, (although STD is still used at times), to avoid the misconception that someone without any symptoms automatically means they’re healthy and free of anything sexually transmitted.

The fact that STIs often exhibit no symptoms doesn’t mean that they can’t pass on to other sexual partners; in fact, it makes transmission increasingly easier.

This means that getting regular testing is necessary for people to be practising safe sex. Fortunately, Malta offers a range of testing and diagnostic services for STIs, including confidential testing.

Getting Tested

It’s easy for any Maltese resident or foreigner to get tested by appointment at the GU Clinic, which is in Mater Dei Hospital. The best part about getting tested here is that it’s all done confidentially. An individual GU code number will be given once someone registers and that code is used as patient identification.

In the case of HIV Rapid Testing, the GU Clinic doesn’t require any appointment to be made. The only thing they clarify is that the test can only be taken 6 weeks after the person suspects contracting HIV. The process is quick and results are out within 20 minutes!

HIV self-testing is also possible by buying a testing kit at a pharmacy or ordering here. Going for this option means the patient performs the test by themselves (or with someone trusted) at home and still receives the results within the 20-minute window.

So, how often should you get tested?

A good rule for practicing safe sex is to test yourself after every new sexual partner, and ideally, ensure your sexual partners do the same. Of course, no one enjoys getting tested, but failing to get tested on time can lead to bigger issues and complications such as infertility, increased transmission of STIs, and chronic pains.

Prevention

Being able to prevent STDs/STIs from transmitting is important and this means consistent use of condoms and regular testing. Using male or female condoms significantly lowers the risks of transmitting diseases, however, they aren’t 100% effective.
In the case of some infections like HPV, vaccinations are available.

What should I do if I get a positive test result?

Depending on the STI, treatment is generally quick and easy, so when detected early on, a positive test result can be straightforward to handle. Although in some cases, only treatment and management are possible, without a total cure.

Treatment for STIs like gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia typically involves one or two doses of antibiotics. It’s generally recommended to wait a week after treatment before being sexually involved with a partner.

A dreaded part of a positive test result is needing to tell your sex partners. This may be dreaded, however, it’s necessary for the health of both your sexual partners and any other sexual partners they may have.

Stigma and how to break it

People often delay testing due to fear of stigma or negative reactions from partners, but this can result in the transmission of STIs to more people and potentially escalate into more serious problems.

Stigma and misconceptions surrounding STDs/STIs are still very much around.
It’s important to challenge these misconceptions and to create spaces where everyone feels safe to get tested and discuss these situations, as any of us can contract STDs/STIs.

Having open and safe spaces for others means that there will be the same space for you too, should you ever need it.

By staying informed, advocating for comprehensive sexual health education, and accessing available resources and support, sexual health can be given the focus it needs. Prioritise prevention, and promote a culture of regular testing that practices safe sex, and most importantly, open communication.

Launched by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), written by Karl Schembri and illustrated by Ana Maria Cosma, “The Journey of Miskit, the Brave Stoat” is an effort to help children manage the inevitable trauma that comes with being displaced.

The book, which is translated into several languages, follows the main character, Miskit, and his journey as he gets lost through the woods. Miskit forms unlikely friendships and works on her self-discovery, eventually leading to her realise that all of life’s ups and downs hold deeper meaning.

Syrian refugee children were also able to contribute to the making of this book by voting on their favourite animal characters.

Camilla Lodi, head of NRC’s Better Learning Programme says the goal of this book is two fold.
Firstly, it “aims to promote understanding and hope for displaced children” and it can also be used as “a valuable tool for educators and caregivers worldwide to engage children in important discussions about empathy, resilience and mental health”.

Author Karl Schembri says “knowing that children I’ve met through my work with NRC will find a friend to walk with them through their moments of loss and loneliness is what really motivated me to write this story, but I also hope to engage children around the world and get them to think of the values of empathy and solidarity, to put themselves in other children’s shoes and figure out the challenges and the hardship that comes with displacement.”

The book, “The Journey of Miskit, the Brave Stoat”, is being sold on Amazon in English, Spanish and Norwegian, with all proceeds being used in order to print more books.
