Wicked Comics is proud to announce the return of the Malta Comic Con following a two-year hiatus!

Wicked Comics, which was founded in 2005, takes pleasure in having fostered a thriving and expanding comics culture in Malta. The Million Dollar Idea: a step towards entrepreneurship | ICTSA https://thirdeyemalta.com/the-million-dollar-idea-a-step-towards-entrepreneurship-ictsa/ Fri, 02 Apr 2021 13:54:02 +0000 https://thirdeyemalta.com/?p=8621 When you look at giant companies such as Tesla, Apple, or Amazon, which now have a combined net worth of just under 5 trillion dollars, [...]

]]>
When you look at giant companies such as Tesla, Apple, or Amazon, which now have a combined net worth of just under 5 trillion dollars, you always wonder how they ended up being so successful.

However, just like any other company, they all started out as an idea in a simple man’s head, which they slowly cultivated into the multinational, influential corporations they are nowadays.

This is what entrepreneurship is all about. The word “entrepreneur” is thrown around at many people for doing anything. Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs, all classified as entrepreneurs. But even your idea of building a hotel for animals can make you a potential entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs are found in all types of industries with all types of backgrounds. In reality, anyone can be an entrepreneur. But that is easier said than done.

While having the right tools to start off your business is important, you will also need determination and ready for the risk. It is not going to be easy, but it will be rewarding. Now, this may seem interesting (even a little bit scary) but ICTSA is here to set the ball rolling. If all this is just what you dream to become, then ICTSA’s ‘The Million Dollar Idea’ might be just for you.

Unfortunately last year, ICTSA had to cancel the event due to the pandemic but this time, it will be completely online! TMDI is a 3-day start-up competition that will be taking place between the 16th and 18th April. Inspired by the global pandemic, the theme for this year will be ‘ICT in Health’ .

How do I enter?

You can form a team of up to 5 people from any academic background. Together you will need to come up with an idea, relevant to this year’s competition’s chosen theme; through workshops, you will be able to develop your idea and then pitch it to the judges!

And do not worry, a mentor will be guiding you to evolve your idea further and make your business idea as good as it can be before presenting it to the judges! You’re probably wondering about the prize… well the winner is entitled to a €600 cash prize, and €400 for the runner up, which can help bring your idea to life. And if that’s not good enough to apply, participation is completely free, so there is nothing to lose. I believe this is a win-win situation.

So grab your thinking caps, gather your teammates, get creative apply by clicking here! ICTSA will be posting more details and updates so make sure to check out their event page here!

Did you know…

That some people can taste colours and shapes? That all human brains start off as female in the womb? Or that the number of synapses in the brain might either equate to or exceed the numbers of stars in the galaxy?  What about the fact that brain information can travel up to 268 miles per hour?

The human brain is considered the most complex machine in the world.  Nonetheless, as with most things, the wonders of the brain still have their downfalls.  On average, 1 in every 4 people is affected by a brain disease, in a given year.  Brain disease is a general term and can refer to various forms of diseases including, Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s, schizophrenia, epilepsy, transient ischemic attack, and mental disorders.

What is PET?

In the 1950s, scientists could examine brains only after death, but new imaging procedures have enabled scientists to study the brain in living animals, including humans. One of the most extensively used techniques is the Positron Emission Tomography (PET). This technique can be used whilst the patient is awake and can thus study the relationship between the physiological alterations and behavioural ones. This is relatively safe to use in humans since it uses just a few micrograms of short-lived radioisotopes.  It functions by making use of a positron, which has a positive charge and the same mass as an electron.

brain
PET SCANNER (Source)

Unstable isotopes are generated, which become stable again after a proton breaks down and dissipates the energy. The positron eventually meets an electron, which emits two gamma rays. Detectors then precisely record the position of these rays. Usually, PET scan results have a general colour scheme. Warm colours like red and orange indicate high activity whilst blue and violet indicate low activity.  The difference in brain activity from one location to another is a clear sign of the brain damage the patient is experiencing, with the range of damage on the brain not being the same for each disease.

PET gives better contrast and spatial resolution when compared to other techniques. For example, Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), is another technique but less expensive.  SPECT shows how organs, in this case, the brain, work. Other techniques that may be used for investigating the brain are Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). This examines structural changes in the brain. There is also Electroencephalography (EEG) which is used to record the electrical activity of the brain.

brain
MRI SCAN (Source)

With the help of these imaging procedures, scientists have just begun to understand what a mental illness is.

One common misconception is that mental illness is not actually a disease. This is because spotting the symptoms is not always an easy task. The truth, however, is that mental illness has a biological basis, just like every other disease. In fact, early detection and early intervention are the best way to go. Mental health professionals can diagnose a patient with the help of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), published by the American Psychiatric Association. Some examples include mood disorders such as depression, psychotic disorders like schizophrenia, eating disorders like anorexia, personality and anxiety disorders as well as addiction disorders such as substance abuse.

Since the gravity of the illness may vary from one person to another, treatment is not a “one size fits all”, but rather needs to be tailored to individual brains, instead of ticking off a list of symptoms.  The road to understanding patients suffering from mental illness is still a work in progress.

Celebrating Brain Awareness Week

Such advancements related to brain research and treatment are celebrated yearly and globally during Brain Awareness Week (BAW), usually held around mid-March.  In 2021 BAW will be celebrated from the 15th to the 21st of March. The initial BAW dates back to 1996, where 160 organisations from the United States were brought together by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives (DABI) to discuss current research improvements.

A webinar with the theme of “The Human Brain on Film” will still be held on the 16th of March at 7pm by ĊineXjenza, which is run by S-Cubed, the Malta Chamber of Scientists, with the support of Spazju Kreattiv and Tiskopri.  ĊineXjenza has invited three speakers, each of whom will be giving a short virtual presentation followed by an open discussion, where member audiences will be allowed to voice their opinions or even ask neuroscience-related questions to the expert panel.

For more information, you can access the event page here. Tickets for this event are free of charge and can be booked here!

Sex used to be a taboo topic but due to the various events taking place, we are slowly increasing sex awareness and its importance. The Centre for Resilience and Socio-emotional Health is once again teaming up with the Students for Healthy Living in order to talk about two prominent topics during the month of love – sex and relationships.

Anna Catania, a counsellor specialising in sex and relationships, will be present and discussing these two topics. She will be giving us an insightful discussion revolving around the psycho-emotional and sexual aspects of relationships. Catania graduated with a B.Sc. in Nursing and continued her studies at MSc level in counselling with a keen focus on sexual medicine.

It will be an open discussion and a variety of questions will be tackled. Such questions will revolve around how sex can be more intimate in relationships, how to improve relationships, how to feel good in relationships and what it means to be in a relationship itself.

The event will be taking place on the 17th of February from 12:00 pm till 2:00 pm at the Psychology Lab.

Calling all writers – experienced or non-experienced (IT’S OKAY)!

Penguin and Panda, Malta’s newest poetry collective are hosting a spoken word event – A Night of Poetry – “Word” – on Friday, 13th December at the beloved Maori in Valletta.

What is spoken word?

Spoken word is “writing that is meant to be read out loud.”  This can include anything from poetry to prose to rap.  What makes spoken word different than other forms of writing is that is intended to be performed aloud.  It makes use of intonation, diction, voice, imagery, action, and sound.

If you have poetry or any type of writing that is just waiting to find an audience, anything that you have been dying to get out there, or if you simply love listening to other people recite their work, come and join us for this event!  You can get the opportunity to try out your poetry in front of an audience and listen to other writers.

The rules are simple:  The poem/piece can be in either English or in Maltese and must be original.  You are strongly encouraged to learn it by heart and perform it from memory.  The reason is that you automatically get more of your audience engaged when doing so and it creates direct contact with your listeners which is something beautiful.

For more information on the event or to apply, send an email to penguinandpandapoetry@gmail.com.

So, what’s your Instagram?

A typical question that is now used to break the ice amongst individuals. Instagram has taken the media by the storm, having accumulated over 1 billion users, it is the rising platform that has created various social media pressures and expectations which can lead to harmful circumstances. In fact, these alarming problems have even caught the attention of Instagram creators who are trying to crack down such results.

Scrolling through the countless photos on your Instagram feed, going through the endless Instagram stories for who knows how long. Are we aware of the effect Instagram leaves us?

Let’s talk…

We are collaborating with Unfiltered in order to further explore the world of Instagram. Unfiltered is made up of six university students: Sarah Aquilina, Maria Gatt, Giorgia Attard, George Michael Grima, Laura Azzopardi, and Elise Brincat. Their aim is to explore youth’s preoccupation with how they present themselves visually on social media and raising awareness about superficial, potentially deterring the situation.

During this discourse, the panel will be discussing how Instagram and the online visual culture affects us. The panel will feature local influencers, industry experts and academics alike in one dynamic discussion.

The variety in the panel will enable a thorough discussion from different perspectives. Join us on the 9th of December at 12 pm KSU Common Room and share your thoughts with us!
