Many people expect a story behind the name Bużżieqa Ħamra but there’s not much to it. Except for the fact that founder Rebecca Calleja loves using the red balloon emoji and people started associating red balloons with her, so the name kind of stuck!

Rebecca shared with The Third Eye;

It all started 3 years ago – I always had an interest in sewing and I loved the idea of making my own clothes so I took a sewing course and during the pandemic I had the time to create the brand Bużżieqa Ħamra – it was a chance to share what I love doing with other people.

Bużżieqa Ħamra‘s Upward Journey

Following this ignited spark, Rebecca learnt embroidery by herself. As she kept working with this textile, she realised it was her favourite. She loved the fact that embroidery allows her to draw on fabric. Rebecca also uses her skills to gift her one-of-a-kind creations to her friends. Other than that, she makes costumes for herself and friends when occasions like carnival festivities come around.

Inspirations for these costumes emerge from Rebecca’s interest in Rococo dress and religious architecture and interiors. Making costumes is a creative process that I really enjoy, and is something I would like to pursue in a professional setting.

Rebecca’s had the opportunity to be offered commission work, notably by the Co-Cathedral of St. John producing face-masks. She has also created a mask to be used in a music video for a local musician Hearts Beating In Time and an assortment of customization work for face-masks, tote bags, clothing and others.

Rebecca shared some closing words with The Third Eye:

I’m curious as to where this vocation leads me. I have many ideas on what other products I want to make and I can’t wait to share them with all of you!

19 years of experience as a chef; with a repertoire that includes leading 5 star hotels, fine dining restaurants and unique cafe’s, Lara has a serious passion for baking. She is currently holding down a full-time job as Eri’s Gourmet Café’s Pastry Chef, but she’s got her own little side business which fuels her passion further.

Lara shared with The Third Eye;

I’m lucky to work at such a unique place that gives me the opportunity to create new baked item’s and it is thanks to this that I get my muse and my passion for baking.

Mistika’s Story

Although Lara had always wished to have a small business she was too scared to take the leap. 6 years ago, Lara was asked to host a cupcake table at the Malta Comic Con and she graciously accepted. Year after year the stand became increasingly successful and Lara took it as a clear sign to start up her own baking brand.

Towards the end of last year, Lara brainstormed ideas in hopes of finding the right name to fit her marvelously mystical cakes. She searched and searched for a simple yet catchy name that would best represent her. Lara’s friends pitched a couple of great name ideas but it just became harder to choose. This was until….

A friend of mine suggested Mistika which is the Maltese translation for Mystique, I instantly fell in love with the name and from there we started our Brand!

Starting out this Brand came with many challenges, such as the creation of her favourite work- the Geode Cake

I made the cake for a close friend of mine, I was terrified of doing it as it was a first for me but it reached my high expectations and surpassed them.

Quality over Quantity

Mistika has developed into a well organized and self-sufficient brand. Lara is a firm believer of ‘quality over quantity.’ She’ll only accept a minimum amount of orders to devout her full attention to each request as it comes in. These orders are made with ethically sourced products and ingredients, turning to local Maltese produce whenever possible as Lara likes supporting small local businesses that are rich in quality.

Lara spoke to The Third Eye about some of the work she has done with local businesses;

I recently finished a collobaration with a fellow creator ‘X or X Creative’ although our  creations are entirely different, it was very intresting and fun for us both as we learned about each others skills and talents and the work that goes behind our  creations. I also have a few future collaborations with other small businesses  planned out for the coming year.

Mistika’s Fortune Telling

Lara’s got a few ideas in the pipeline for us. She is currently working on the launch of an exclusive Mistika Menu- it will host small unique pastries containing from a variety of traditional Maltese flavours to modern favourites, each with a unique Mistika twist to it.

Lets hope that this Menu will include Lara’s personal favourites; the Biscoff cake ( a top seller)!

Looking a bit further ahead, Lara dreams of owning her own small bakery one day. She feels great satisfaction when clients return for more order as it fills her with hope and pride, seeing these clients in store would be quite fulfilling.

Lara also shared with The Third Eye:

Something that is also very important behind my whole Brand is the constant support that I get from my partner Neil my family and my friends, their support keeps my Brand going.

Check out how the business, the students and ICTSA reacted to yesterday’s annual Industry Expo.

The Businesses

Congrats to all the students who attended! Your enthusiasm, eagerness and informed questions were duly noted. That said, the gist of feedback from businesses was a wide appreciation for all the enthusiasm and informed questions supplied by the attendees.

The Students

To those that didn’t go – you missed out on freebies! At least that’s partly what the students we asked noted. Those present also commended the event as a great opportunity for networking and just getting general information about companies you might potentially work with.

ICTSA

Year after year the students don’t disappoint. ICTSA praised this year’s expo as a record turnout that even exceeded their expectations! That was not to mention the businesses that provided a quality first-hand experience for all the visitors.

ICTSA also personally commented on their event and expressed their gratitude for another successful Industry Expo!

Today ICTSA held the 5th edition of their ICTSA Industry Expo, together with the Faculty of ICT, where the event took place. Here a record number of attending students visited over 20 companies and learnt about what they offer to the industry. Students had the opportunity to get insight on what each company offers, learning first hand from the experts who power the fields. This served as a great opportunity for students to survey the commercial aspect of the current
career landscape and to network with their potential future employers.

ICTSA would like to thank the participating companies who took their time to exhibit their work, as well as all the students who attended and interacted with the companies. This event wouldn’t have been possible without the continuous support of the Faculty of ICT.
