Launched by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), written by Karl Schembri and illustrated by Ana Maria Cosma, “The Journey of Miskit, the Brave Stoat” is an effort to help children manage the inevitable trauma that comes with being displaced.

The book, which is translated into several languages, follows the main character, Miskit, and his journey as he gets lost through the woods. Miskit forms unlikely friendships and works on her self-discovery, eventually leading to her realise that all of life’s ups and downs hold deeper meaning.

Syrian refugee children were also able to contribute to the making of this book by voting on their favourite animal characters.

Camilla Lodi, head of NRC’s Better Learning Programme says the goal of this book is two fold.
Firstly, it “aims to promote understanding and hope for displaced children” and it can also be used as “a valuable tool for educators and caregivers worldwide to engage children in important discussions about empathy, resilience and mental health”.

Author Karl Schembri says “knowing that children I’ve met through my work with NRC will find a friend to walk with them through their moments of loss and loneliness is what really motivated me to write this story, but I also hope to engage children around the world and get them to think of the values of empathy and solidarity, to put themselves in other children’s shoes and figure out the challenges and the hardship that comes with displacement.”

The book, “The Journey of Miskit, the Brave Stoat”, is being sold on Amazon in English, Spanish and Norwegian, with all proceeds being used in order to print more books.

The National Book Council together with Ghaqda tal-Malti are once again presenting the Campus Book Festival.

This event will be held on quad at the University of Malta between Wednesday 21st and Friday 23rd March. The vast program is packed with interviews with foreign writers and also Maltese authors who will have the opportunity to share their work and their experience with University students who might prosper to become writers themselves in the future. There will also be several workshops related to literature and art as well as discussions and guided tours around the University of Malta Library.

The main aim of this event is to promote literature whilst also giving an opportunity to publishers and writers to promote their publications. This year’s special guest is Jasmin B. Frelih, a Slovenian author who earned the European Prize for Literature back in 2016. The festival will end on Friday night with some live music after an Open Mic, where the public can read and exhibit their own works of art and literature.
