Imagine feeling frustrated in your own faculty not knowing how to solve a problem or issue that affects you personally. This is how all the students of the Faculty of Education had felt for years, not having anyone to represent them and give them a voice. That is, until MAKE was founded earlier this year!

After years of student inactivity within the Faculty of Education, Nicola Kirkpatrick and Ezekiel Xuereb wanted students to be given a voice once again. Having experienced the same futility as students themselves, “MAKE’s main intentions are always that of allowing students concerns to be heard and hopefully resolved,” said Ezekiel Xuereb, Secretary General. Thus, the Malta Association for Knowledge and Education was formed.

MAKE Executive 2018/19

MAKE is already proving itself as a genuine link between faculty and student, having already aired two separate issues on behalf of two student groups. That said, they have a brimming agenda promising more student engagement this coming scholastic year. Their Freshers’ Week stand in particular is an excellent opportunity for students to meet and get to know who will be representing them!

Freshers’ Week is just the start however. “The faculty’s first ever Fresher’s Party is set to take place October 12th and Zumba for Pink October on 19th October,” said Ezekiel. “We are also planning something for Halloween and a stationary drive for charity in order to give back to the community.”

Excited to know what else does the future hold for MAKE? You can visit them at their stand this Freshers Week for more information, as well as snacks, sweets and freebies for interested members. Also, if the Freshers’ Party got you excited, you’re in luck – tickets for it can be won at their stand too!

Don’t feel frustrated. MAKE your change.

University of Malta Racing, a student organisation within the university and Malta’s very own Formula Student Team unveiled the newest iteration of their racecar at an event in Villa Bighi yesterday. The racecar is designed to compete in Formula Student, and 2018 marks the fifth time the team will compete in such an event, following successful attempts in 2007, 2014, 2015 and 2017. This year, however, will be the first time the team competes in Formula Student UK, in the Silverstone circuit.

Yesterday’s event brought together all those who have contributed to the project in some way or another, including all the sponsors, contributors, alumni and team members. Present at the event were Prof. Godfrey Baldacchino, Pro-Rector of the University of Malta and Ryan Borg, a representative from the Parliamentary Secretariat for Youth, Sport and Voluntary Organisations, who gave a few words on the occasion.

This year, the team made a number of improvements to various parts of the car, including a complete redesign of the turbocharger setup, a newly designed, lighter pedal box and a new electronics system. The most visible improvement is the application of an aerodynamic package which had been in the research phase through engineering final year projects in the past years.

UoMR thanks the University of Malta and its Research Trust (RIDT), and all sponsors and collaborators who helped throughout this project. A big thank also goes to the team’s faculty advisor, Dr. Ing. Maurizio Fenech, who has been a crucial member of the team from the very beginning.

The team’s main sponsors include The Ministry for Education and Employment, Enemed e-power, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, SKF, Silvercraft Products Ltd., PwC Malta, Bahco Tools, Attrans International Transport, Empav Engineering, G Molton and Zoqdi Racing Garage.

Let’s Move, the Pilot Project is on SDM’s agenda for the upcoming week of the KSU 2018 election campaign. The Third Eye spoke with Carla Galea, who is a candidate on behalf of SDM, running for the role of KSU President in the upcoming elections.

Carla explained that “the idea behind the Park and Ride system is that of reducing the number of cars on campus. Next Wednesday SDM will be implementing a Park & Ride Pilot Project, part of the Let’s Move Campaign, for FREE. Students will get an idea of how easy it is to get to campus when you don’t have to look for parking, because of alternative available means. I encourage students to try it out, especially those living near Mosta, as it will not only save you time – it will also save you money and will get you to your lectures on time whilst contributing to a cleaner environment. This is the long term solution to the parking problem at University, which will hopefully be introduced by other companies, making an impact across Malta as well.”

One can apply for next Wednesday’s Free Park&Ride here: www.sdm.org.mt/letsmove

The process is quite straightforward! The first 200 applicants will have guaranteed parking at the Ta’ Qali Car Park for free. This Pilot Project will take place next Wednesday 25th April and the application forms will be available till tomorrow, Monday 23rd April 16:00.

Earlier this afternoon, Kris Bajada, who is contesting the upcoming KSU Elections as an independent candidate, addressed in a statement to the public, the “false rumours that being an independent candidate will negatively affect [his] ability to get funding.”

Bajada, running for KSU President, explained how being an independent candidate does not hinder the capacity to attract sponsors and consequently funding, for KSU. In fact he held that “on the contrary I truly believe that not only will we maintain current sponsors but then KSU will become free from party politics and we will get more sponsors.”

Kris Bajada stated that he was shocked to hear such statement because it is the proof to his argument that the mentality of many is that in order to achieve something you need to be part of a political party. Ultimately, Bajada held that students and the public at large should always remember that “Political parties do not give us the power to do something; we give THEM the power. You students possess the power and influence not the political party.”

Bajada concluded by stating that he is confident that both political parties will step-up to help the student irrespective of who leads KSU during the upcoming term. “As an independent I am willing to work with everyone and anyone for the betterment of the students.”

Yesterday, Kris Bajada announced his candidacy for the role of KSU President as an independent candidate in the upcoming KSU Elections.
This means that besides the teams contesting on behalf of Pulse and SDM respectively, Kris Bajada will also be contesting for the role of president precisely against Carla Galea for SDM and Jean Claude Scicluna for Pulse.
In his statement, Bajada explained that there is political background behind the candidature of the SDM and Pulse teams and this has motivated him to step forward and contest this election independently. He explains how “Student’s organisations should never be an extension of a political party, student’s organisations should never be an extension of the government or of the opposition. The whole concept of the student’s organisation is to pressure those in power to achieve more for the students.”

Bajada explained how in his opinion, whilst Faculty-based organisations have flourished over the years, he cannot say the same for KSU because party politics affected the council greatly.

Moreover, Bajada held that “if Pulse is elected they will not push the government more than their party will let them. If SDM is elected it will always find obstacles to negotiate with the government being opposing parties. Being an independent means that I can negotiate and push the government that little bit further and also I canwork with anyone as I will not be bound by any political party; thus I can work to get the best for you.”

Bajada emphasised that this does in no way mean that he is against political parties but rather he is contesting indepently also to ensure that both political parties and their respective leaders when visiting University, receive the respect they deserve. Bajada concluded his official candidacy launch by stating “So, let us prove on election day that you do not need to be in a political party to have your voice truly heard. As an independent president; at long last KSU will not belong to a political party but to us, the students.”

Wara li fil-11:00, l-għaqda Studenti Demokristjani Maltin, ħabbret it-tim ta’ kandidati li ser jikkontestaw f’isem l-SDM fl-elezzjonijiet tal-KSU, din hi Press Release minn SDM stess bid-dettalji ta’ dak li sar fil-‘Launch’, li hemm pjanat għall-elezzjoni, il-viżjoni tat-tim u fuq kollox lista tal-kandidati.

“Ninsabu kburin li aktar kmieni llum, nedejna l-kampanja tagħna għal din is-sena, ‘Li Jixraq Lilek’.

Matul is-snin, l-SDM dejjem kienet hemm għall-istudenti fi kwalunkwe sitwazzjoni. Dejjem ħassejna ir-responsabbilita’ li nippreżentaw team ta’ Kandidati, b’taħlita ta’ esperjenza u demm ġdid, biex jirrapreżenta bl-aħjar mod lill-istudenti Universitarji.

Bil-Pass li Jmiss, l-SDM fil-KSU introduċiet diversi inizzjattivi għal benefiċċju ta’ kulħadd. Inizzjattivi fuq carpooling, li forsi ma tantx kienu popolari għall-ewwel, kienu pass importanti biex inkunu aħna, l-istudenti, il-bidla li hemm bżonn isir. Iktar minn 60 Elf Ewro investiti fina l-istudenti, maqsumin f’Opportunitajiet Internazzjonali, Fond għall-għaqdiet, Fond għal Sport u Kultura u Investiment qawwi fit-trasport u l-mobilita’. Dan apparti x-xogħol preċidenti li komplejna nibnu fuqhom, speċjalment fejn tidħol Night Time Study Area u Extended Library Hours li għal bidu deheru impossibli, imma llum il-ġurnata huma parti importanti mill-inizzjattivi tal-KSU.

Din is-sena, b’team immexxi minn Carla Galea, li okkupat il-kariga ta’ Segretarja Ġenerali matul l-aħħar terminu, aħna lesti biex inkomplu nagħtu l-istudent, dak li jixraqlu. B’team li ġej minn kull sfera tal-Universita’, aħna lesti nużaw id-differenzi ta’ bejnietna bħala opportunita’ biex inkunu ta’ rappreżentanza denja għal kulħadd. It-team se jkun kompost minn;

Carla Galea; Studenta tal-Liġi, Għawdxija, li okkupat il-kariga ta’ Segretarja Ġenerali tal-KSU.

Matthew John Dougall; Student tal-Masters f’Marketing, li jokkupa kariga fl-ASCS.

Karin Cassar; Studenta tal-Psikoloġija u tokkupa kariga fil-Betapsi.

Naomi Attard; Studenta gradwata mil-Faculty of Health Sciences u tokkupa kariga fl-MHSA.

Luke Abela; Student tal-Mediċina, li ukoll okkupa kariga fil-KSU matul l-aħħar sena.

William Farrugia; Student tal-Liġi u jokkupa kariga fl-Eżekuttiv tal-SDM.

Clint Vassallo; Student tal-Engineering, u jokkupa kariga fil-UESA.

Chris Aquilina; Student tal-Liġi u jokkupa kariga f’JEF Malta.

Celine Bartolo; Studenta tal-Ekonomija, waħda mill-ko-ordinaturi ta’ Students Fest u tokkupa kariga fil-University Sports Club, u University Wolves.

Joseph Farrugia; Student tal-Arkitettura u kien jokkupa karigi fis-SACES.

Eman Haber; Student ieħor Għawdxi, student tal-BCOM, Student Rep u jokkupa Kariga fl-ASCS.

B’dan it-team aħna ser naċċertaw li nkunu inklussivi, proattivi u ta’ widen għall-istudent, ġej minn fejn ġej.

Inħeġġu, lill-istudenti biex ikunu parti minn din il-kampanja. Fl-aħħar minn l-aħħar, din ser tkun qed ddur mal-ideat tagħhom, sabiex flimkien inkunu nistgħu nagħtu, Kunsill li Jixraq Lilek.”
