Surrender to Sorrento

Even though it’s barely even spring yet, most of us are counting the days till summer. Let’s be honest, many of us spend most of the summer holidays on our laptop or at work, a fact which really defies the purpose and ’meaning’ of summer, that of relaxing, unwinding, taking a well needed rest, enjoying time with friends, indulging in ice-creams and really and truly achieving that sun-kissed tan, which most of us really need right now. While we all need something to look forward to for the summer holidays, we need some time off from the Internet addiction and the daily routine. And what’s better than having the ultimate summer holiday with your friends this year? Probably nothing. If you’re planning on discovering some place new together with your friends this summer, Sorrento is the best place you can think of.

I was lucky enough to go to Sorrento and its surrounding islands last summer, and I can truly say that it’s the most beautiful place I’ve ever been to. The place is famous for its lemon produce and it’s clear blue waters, which you can even spot from the plane’s window. Its narrow little streets full of tiny shops selling ’Limoncello’ will make you feel as if you’re in a Disney movie, like "Beauty and the Beast”. As Belle, the main character says, ’’a little town full of little people waving up to say, ’bonjour, bonjour, bonjour!’ Except these guys are more likely to say ’ciao bella!’ rather than a ’bonjour’.

Legend has it that, long ago, the song of the mermaids lured love-starved sailors to a watery grave in the seas below Sorrento. Today, the blue colour of Sorrento’s sea still acts as a magnet, not to love-starved sailors, but to tourists coming from all over the world.

As well as being worth visiting in its own right, Sorrento makes a good base for reaching other scenic spots in the area, including the beautiful islands of Capri and Ischia, and of course, Pompeii; the town famously buried in ash when Vesuvius erupted. My personal favourite out of these was Capri and honestly, it looked like something coming out of a post-card. I cannot describe how beautiful the place is.

On our arrival in Capri, we went on a chair lift experience, which I highly recommend as it gives you a birds-eye view of the island. Once in Capri, trying their lemon products is a must. Starting from soap and finishing with their lemon-slushed ice, the products are all made organically from the best lemons in the world. As somebody who spends most of the year whirring like a hamster on the wheel of fashion, I naturally found Capri as bliss. I also noticed that the garments of the famous fashion houses, such as ’Dolce & Gabbana’ in Capri, had lemons incorporated in their design

The best part of this holiday was by far the panoramic views and the different and astonishing colours of blues. The blues of the water in Sorrento, Capri and the other islands that are around them, are incomparable. (P.S. I do apologise if you’ve read this while being tucked up in bed whilst listening to the rain pouring outside but at least now you have something to think of when it comes to planning your summer activities).
