Students applying for their stipend via the government website (https://studentgrants.gov.mt/) this year may notice something different in the application process. When completing the application page requesting applicants to enter their personal details, students are offered a third option when prompted to select their gender.
As seen in the screenshot extract above taken from the online application, the option “neutral” is now available.
It is interesting to see that authorities have progressed in this regard. This not only shows that the authorities are aware of and acknowledge current social matters in society, but that they are adapting accordingly.
Whilst this may be considered as progress, on the other hand, does the Students’ Maintenance Grant Board really need to know and keep a record of one’s gender for the purposes of a maintenance grant application?
Furthermore, although one understands that a record of gender may be needed in applications of a specific nature, would it not be a greater expression of tolerance and equality if applicants are not faced with the question of gender at all?
