“SDM has today held a press conference outside Junior College to call for the implementation of a number of road embellishments in order to improve road safety in the best interest of the students attending this institution together with other local commuters. During this year’s Freshers’ Week, SDM has maintained its commitment to raise the bar by improving standards in SDM-represented institutions. During today’s press conference, SDM President Luke Muscat recalled how SDM proposed a plan to improve road embellishments in the immediate vicinities.
Road safety is a major concern amongst Junior College students, especially due to the heavy traffic going through the area at peak hours. During busy periods, hundreds of students cross the roads around Junior College. SDM’s proposal back in 2013 included the introduction of two new zebra crossings and the installation of speed bumps. The proposal was approved by the Imsida Local Council in January 2014 and plans were instantly forwarded to Transport Malta. Needless to say SDM has maintained regular contact with Local Council representatives however the works have not yet been implemented despite being approved. It is necessary to change propositions into concrete actions. We believe that now it is time to act!
SDM holds that this is a very critical issue and that the safety and accessibility of Junior College students remains our top priority. Muscat called for immediate execution of the approved plan of the Local Council which would bring a positive change in the area. SDM also believes that on a larger scale, a report should be commissioned to examine the traffic management around all post-secondary institutions.”
