Last Friday marked the launch of a new campaign, “Save the Countryside”, by "Din l-Art Ħelwa’. This campaign aims to highlighting the importance of the countryside and to inspire people to take action against the ever-increasing threat to biodiversity. Housing, roads, industry and the expansion of urban areas are a few of the threats that Malta’s countryside is facing. Simone Mizzi, President of "Din l-Art Ħelwa’, stated that the government has failed to speak in favour of the environment, and is further threatening it by implementing new laws that do little to protect it. A letter written by the aforementioned non-governmental organisation (NGO), addressed to the Prime Minister, and signed by all six serving and former Presidents, has remained unanswered. This has triggered Ms Mizzi to call the public to come forward.
Mr Alan Deidun, an expert in sciences and marine ecology, mentioned the high level of biodiversity found in Malta, home to over eighty endemic species. Discussing new discoveries found every year, he urged the public to think about all the species that are at the risk of not being discovered due to the overtaking of the environment. Mr Deidun said that this campaign will help raise awareness on an aspect that we have not yet addressed — Biodiversity.
The Third Eye encourages everyone to support and follow this campaign by liking the Facebook page found below, whilst hoping that the work of this organisation, as well as others, will result in the preservation of our countryside.
