The sixth edition of Rockestra was held once again on the 27th of September, at the MFCC Ta’ Qali. With all of the income going for the Malta Community Chest Fund, Rockestra is a concert of rock music featuring the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and several Maltese singers. The theme of this year’s edition was "Don’t Stop Believing’, targeting two main aims: supporting and encouraging individuals suffering from some serious illness, and the second is targeting new bands who this year were invited to take the Rockestra stage for the first time.
The line up included big names such as Gianluca Bezzina (and his six siblings), Errol Sammut, Gianni Zammit and Ivan Filletti, as well as uprising young talents such as the sisters Philippa and Bettina Cassar from the band The New Victorians, Keith Zammit from Relikc and Simaria Galea. The set list covered several different genres, varying from the 21st century all the way back to the 1970s. The singers covered the likes of Foo Fighters, Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper and ACDC, as well as songs from Coldplay, Adele, and Kings of Leon. Furthermore, an appearance by Nicky Bomba led to the singing of the traditional Maltese song "Lanca gejja u ohra sejra’. Nicky Bomba, a world renowned Reggae/ska singer, is an Australian who was born in Malta, and even played the same Maltese song at Glastonbury Festival, one of the biggest music festivals held in London.
A showcase of local talent, Rockestra is an event where music lovers, adults and children alike get to listen to some of the biggest songs while donating for an extremely generous cause. For the first time in its history, a second edition of Rockestra is going to be held tonight, with both events being sold-out. We would like to congratulate all the singers, musicians, backstage crew and organisers and encourage people to attend this yearly event as well as donate for the Malta Community Chest Fund.
