As the nominations for Social Policy Commissioner (KPS) shall be closing in this coming Saturday at 5 p.m., currently Alexander Hili is the most favourite candidate to take over this role for the 2015/2016 term.
However, as things stand, it will not be S-Cubed’s Vice-President who will be occupying this role, but instead the most favorite contender is second-year law student, Robert Napier. Although his nomination will not be put forward by Studenti Demokristjani Maltin (SDM), Napier shall enjoy SDM’s backing, which backing is very likely to eliminate any other competition. Napier also happens to be Rebecca Mercieca’s boyfriend, who in today’s week KSU elections contested on behalf of Pulse.
On the other hand, despite being widely tipped to contest for this role, Mario Frendo shall not be contesting.
The KPS elections shall be held during next Wednesday’s KPS meeting.
Robert Napier’s reply:
“First and foremost a big thank you for the mention in your article. However, I would like to clarify one essential point. The role of KPS Commissioner is a very prestigious and important role within the KSU, and that being said, I would like to make it clear that I shall be contesting this election as an independent candidate without affiliating myself with any political organisation on campus. I have good rapport with both Pulse and SDM, and would really and truly appreciate their backing. Nevertheless, I am not backed up by SDM as the article indicates. I am an independent student, who believes that he can bring fresh ideas into the KPS Office should I be trusted with the role.”
SDM’s statement:
“As SDM, we deny these allegations. The nominations haven’t yet closed and, until now, there is no confirmed list of candidates for this election.
Being an organisation, SDM only has one vote and is to decide how to use this vote in the best way possible after seeing the final list of canidates, together with the elctoral programme and the ideas of every candidate. SDM will not be campaigning for any particular candidate. These elctions are independent and represent an essential part of KSU, a part which seeks to represent the student in the best way possible.
Hence, SDM does not seek to influence these elections by campaigning.”
