Nathan Darmanin | INTERVIEW

“I can’t spend 2 days without being on air. I miss it!”

Nathan Darmanin, who is a well-known Maltese DJ, known as Nate, is generally associated with Bay’s Drive Time. However, Nate’s schedule also includes DJing at parties and other events. Apart from having a career in entertainment, Nate is also entertaining wherever he is. His personality, which augments his Djing skills, assures a good two hours of music daily between 3.30pm and 5.30pm on 89.7.

When contacted by Claire Pace Monreal, from The Third Eye, Nate disclosed what lead him to this lifestyle and what inspires his brilliance, along with other interesting facts.

How did you end up in the music industry?

“Well, my family, especially my Dad’s side, was always involved in music in someway or another. I was always interested in the making of music and I simply wanted to be part of it. I started DJing at around the age of 13 or 14 in a local Parish Church Hall with some of my friends. We used to organise parties for teenagers our age. At 16 I got my first radio gig in a local community radio station and I learnt a lot from there. Two years later, at the age of 18, I made the big move… started training as a presenter at Bay, which was a life changing experience. I started to be involved with more clubs and big names. That’s basically how I made it through. “

Do you get your inspiration from anywhere in particular, or do you just play what you think people want to hear?

“When it comes to the radio we have a very strict music policy, but in clubs I tend to play festival "stuff’. I’m obviously inspired from guys like Steve Angello, Seb Ingrosso, Fedde Le Grand, Alesso and all the big names in EDM. I follow a lot of what they do.”

Are there tracks you completely loathe but play anyway?

Nate laughs off an “I have to” in response to this question. “At the end its not about me… it’s about the people” he adds.

Does your career hinder your appreciation for music, or does it amplify it?

“At times it does hinder it a bit yeah… especially when dealing with radio, because I can’t control what I play. I tend to focus on what I’m going to say… but the truth is, I can’t spend 2 days without being on air. I miss it!”

Is there a message you would like to pass on to Bay fans and loyal listeners?

Joking around, Nate smartly answers “I pass messages every day… so stay tuned for the next one!”
