World Physiotherapy Day is commemorated on the 8th of September. Physiotherapy focuses on prevention and the rehabilitation of various health conditions. The COVID-19 pandemic has overwhelmed health care systems across the globe, and needless to say, physiotherapists have joined other doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals as front liners.
Physiotherapists will monitor patients and check whether the patient needs help with respiratory function or physical recovery. This is done by looking at the patient’s oxygen levels, blood test results, and lung scans.
This year’s theme focuses on COVID-19 and rehabilitation. When taking the long term risks of this virus into consideration, one would expect this matter to be treated with great urgency. Although the degree of this impairment and disability are yet unclear, it is evident that patients and their families are suffering from COVID-19 and require rehabilitation in all phases; acute, post-acute, and long-term.
Benefits have included optimising health by incorporating treatment that focuses massively on the respiratory system, and functional outcomes. Proper rehabilitation also allowed for early discharge from hospitals and reducing the risk of readmission.
MHSA would like to thank all physiotherapists for their immense work and continuous effort especially throughout this pandemic.
