Maria Aquilina Elected As MMS President

Malta Mathematical Society (MMS) held their AGM on October 28, 2022. During their AGM, Maria Aquilina was elected as president of the organisation.

The Background Of The Malta Mathematical Society

The Malta Mathematical Society was formed in 1998, and its first general meeting was held on 5
January 1999. After nearly a decade of inactivity, plans to reform the Society were set in motion by
a group of students, most notably by Luke Collins, Jake Xuereb, and Xandru Mifsud, with the
guidance of Professor Joseph Muscat.

Through the year 2021, an ad-hoc Executive Committee of Malta Mathematical Society was set up,
which consisted of Luke CollinsJake Xuereb, Xandru MifsudEthan James GermanGiorgio
Grigolo
Adriana Baldacchino, and Juan Xerri. The Committee worked on many outreach projects
and towards formalizing the operations of the Society.

The Mission Of The Malta Mathematical Society

The aim of the society is to encourage the formal and informal discussion of Mathematics and to

Presidential Comment

As a Society, our principal aim is to make Mathematics accessible for all. During the upcoming year, the Malta Mathematical Society has in mind to host lecture series, talks, and a wide variety of outreach events in order to reach as wide an audience as possible.

We shall also consolidate our presence in the media by participating on radio and television programmes as well as publishing frequent online content, which may serve to introduce students to mathematical concepts useful in their academic work and study.

The Society is more than happy to direct students from all Faculties to useful mathematical material relating to their area of study. We encourage all students at the University of Malta and beyond to follow us on Facebook and Instagram to learn more and to participate in our events.

The Third Eye wishes the new executive the best of luck for their upcoming term!
