KE Candidate: Clayton Axisa

Why did you choose to contest Education Commissioner?

If we go right to the heart of the matter, the consensus is that leaders become great by bringing out the best in people. Although the message is clear, the task is not easy. Throughout my experience as President of the ICT Students’ Association, I believe that I have helped to inspire my people to reach higher, dream bigger, and achieve greater.

What is your background in Organisations?

The term "motivation’ describes forces within the individual that account for the level, direction and persistence of effort expended at work. Simply put, a highly motivated person works hard at a job, while an unmotivated person does not. I personally consider myself to be a motivated person. Furthermore, I always try my utmost to create conditions under which other persons feel consistently inspired to work hard.

The roles listed below indicate clearly my background in Student Organisations:

  • President at ICT Students’ Association — December 2015 till Present
  • Student Representative on Senate at University of Malta — November 2015 till Present
  • International Officer at ICT Students’ Association — May 2015 till December 2015

Why should Student Representatives trust you with their vote?

Student representatives should trust me with their vote because I strongly think that I am competent in guiding people and other resources to work together to accomplish a goal. There is little doubt that discomfort with change can hinder and obstruct the status quo. However, I humbly consider myself capable of taking initiative to change the existing pattern of behaviour of the social system. I would strive to make things happen, even if inertia makes people reluctant to embrace new ways of doing things.

How do you plan to tackle apathy at University?

Tackling apathy is no easy task. Change creates anxiety and breaks us from past habits and conditions. Uncertainty puts many things out of our control. However, in my opinion, a tentative approach would be working directly with Student Organisations and Student Representatives to create a clearer strategy, which is tailor made for each particular niche. This roadmap would reduce the lack of interest amongst students while stimulating curiosity and enthusiasm.

Why are you better for the role than other contesting candidates?

I am an individual who always successfully brings about a positive impact through communication and collaboration. However, I genuinely feel that the right individuals to answer that question are my fellow Executive Board Members, with whom I have worked closely to transform ideas into action. In addition, I would like to take the opportunity to thank them for their time and commitment.

On a scale of 1-10 how would you rate the management of last year’s KE office overall, and give a reason for your rating.

I strongly believe that Ryan and Matthew have done an admirable and exemplary job. They must be very satisfied with what they have achieved after a year of sacrifice and hard work. It takes special dedication and perseverance to get through such demanding roles. I would like to congratulate them and wish them the best as they embark on their next exciting adventure. If elected, I will do my utmost to follow their footsteps by working unconditionally to achieve the desired results.

What would you have done better or changed if you could?

Whether you work at the top of an organisation or at lower levels, interacting with others to support their work efforts and your own is the necessary toolkit to ensure effective results. This is the reason why I am contesting. If elected, I will do my best to learn from my team in order to make better informed decisions.
