Jessica Portelli: This Girl Pointed out that Girls my Size Shouldn’t Wear Bikinis

Jessica Portelli, a Maltese girl who lives abroad, was the subject of one of yesterday’s news items after being told that girls her size shouldn’t be seen wearing bikinis. Following this, The Third Eye contacted Jessica for comments.

“First of all, I want to clarify that it was not the salesgirl who passed the comment, but another girl who was shopping,” explained Jessica.

“I found a bikini that looked appropriate for my size and, while waiting in the queue with this bikini in my hand, a girl pointed out that girls my size shouldn’t wear bikinis, to which I replied that girls her size shouldn’t tell girls my size what to do.”

“However, her remarks persisted as she was trying to ridicule me. In other circumstances I might have acted in a different manner, but the girl was with another friend, while I was alone, and secondly, I didn’t want to lose my job and my reputation.”

“Luckily, I’m happy with the way that I look, but to a different girl, those comments could have had a devastating effect.”

“During the past couple of days, I have received over a thousand friend requests, together with hundreds of messages on Facebook from all over the world. Most of the messages were encouraging, but there were obviously hatred messages also.”

My final message to all those people who are not happy with the way they look, is that they should accept and love themselves if they want people to do the same,” concluded Jessica.
