This morning Pulse announced that they will not be contesting the Kunsill Studenti Universitarji (KSU) for the second consecutive year.
The last KSU Election involving two contesting organisations was in April 2015. That time, Pulse’s team of candidates running for KSU, lead by Brendan Zerafa, lost the election by a margin of one thousand votes. At that time it looked like a huge blow for Pulse, who just a few months earlier, had also lost the election at Junior College.
Let’s be honest, Pulse has been insisting that the organisation disagrees with the electoral system employed in KSU for years now, claiming that it is not as representative as it should be. But then again, not contesting KSU Elections is not going to help in any way. Not contesting the election only means that apathy is likely to increase, the turnout for the Annual General Meeting will decrease again, and any change within the electoral system of KSU elections will be highly unlikely.
Pulse’s decision not to contest KSU Elections means that now it has to be SDM’s entire responsibility to choose a team of eleven people to represent the University and Junior College students. It is a huge pity that in the highest Educational Institution in Malta, students are not even trusted to choose their representatives.
The only sure thing is that SDM won’t be winning, Pulse won’t be winning, and student activism in general will be suffering another huge blow.
