Following yesterday’s speech during the Nationalist Party’s General Council, by current Kunsill Studenti Universitarji (KSU) President, Gayle Lynn Callus, many were those who questioned whether Callus did the right thing in accepting the invitation to such an event.
Callus informed The Third Eye that after being contacted by the Nationalist Party leader, Dr Simon Busuttil, he instantly discussed the matter with both the KSU executive board and his own family, as both of which warned him to be cautious in attending such events due to the possibility of being labeled.
“I want to make it clear that if a similar event is organized by the Labour Party, I will not find an objection in attending. In fact, I hope that they will present such an opportunity,” explained Callus. “However, if they do invite the KSU President, my term will probably be over.”
Callus emphasized that whilst delivering his speech he was giving a voice to the concerns of University students as he spoke about what resulted from the Social Policy Commission (KPS) and Education Commission (KE).
Moreover, when he spoke about Insite Malta’s article named "Accept the message, Shoot the Messenger’, an article which attacked Callus’s decision to attend this event, Callus said that attacking personalities instead of their arguments is the wrong approach.
“The people who opposed my appearance during an event held by the Nationalist Party attacked me, not my speech, no one said that I was in anyway biased,” added Callus.
Finally, Callus insisted that it would be useless for students to attend such events, from different political parties, without giving their opinion.
