Earlier today “Front Favur il-Mina” circulated a Press Release containing three proposals for the upcoming budget. The proposals are as follows:
1. Cargo ferry service.
Re-introduction of ferry service for cargo connecting Gozo to the centre of Malta. This will not only benefit the seafarers but will also ease traffic in Malta as trailers and cargo trucks will bypass most of the roads in the North and Central Malta. This service would ideally be operated regularly as it was offered by the Gozo Channel until last December.
2. Fast ferry service
Since its inception, the Front has proposed that a fast ferry service offering a faster link between Gozo and central Malta is necessary, especially for the short and medium term. Such service will help to alleviate the situation for those that cross frequently between Gozo and the Mainland, mainly workers, students and patients, reducing the travelling time by half. Moreover, such service has to cater for the ever-growing demand.
3. Studies
Just recently, the government has issued a tender for the gathering of geological data on the Malta-Gozo channel tunnel, also providing an outline of how the study process should be carried out as well as the proposed boring areas. Whilst acknowledging this development, one should not dismiss the fact that studies should be continuous and ongoing, with the learned aim of finding the best route for the sub seabed tunnel.
