The MKSU (Moviment Kattoliku Studenti Universitarji) held their annual AGM, yesterday, Friday May 15th, with the main aim being that of electing the new executive for the year 2015-2016. Karl Andrew Schembri was elected President of this Catholic organisation, which has been active since 1929, while Michael Piccinino took the role of Vice-President.
Other positions are now officially occupied by Nicholas Triganza as the Secretary General, Roberta DeBono as the Treasurer and Gianluca Busuttil as the Public Relations Officer. In addition, Roderick Baldacchino and Johann Camilleri are also holding the roles of International, National and Diocese Coordinator and Projects and Resources Coordinator respectively.
The principal objective of MKSU is to propagate Christian values around campus with the hope that faith, justice and peace will continue to be considered as priorities amongst University students. Moreover, the movement strives to enhance the unity between different religious organisations in order to work hand in hand as a single church, as the Christian religion encourages. MKSU is open for all students who wish to feel part of a catholic organisation but have not yet had the opportunity to do so.
When contacted by The Third Eye, the newly elected President of MKSU said that, “Today it is not the number but the quality that counts. Youths tend to decrease their activism within the church and its institutions and in fact, one is unlikely to find young people involved in church organisations.” He went on to explain that this is a reciprocal process; since the Church is continuously attempting to improve its approach towards youth, young people should in return stop criticising the church for being old-fashioned and instead help the Church achieve the well-needed change.
Finally, he concluded that, “I am aware of such controversies and hence, I encourage all those, who for one reason or another don’t speak up, to participate. My prospective ideas for this year’s executive is to raise awareness that the Church is inclusive and should take an important role in our life.”
