In a statement issued this morning on Facebook, Studenti Demokristjani Maltin (SDM) expressed its concern about the recent proposal presented by the Government regarding the possibility of school hours starting an hour earlier than they do presently, in a bid to reduce national traffic congestion.
Whilst admitting that, “school hours make a relative impact on the traffic congestion”, SDM suggested that the problem is much wider than it appears to be, since traffic congestion persists during summer months.
In reaction to this, SDM suggested that the government should tackle the traffic issue from a different perspective, such as by improving the public transport system, whilst offering “incentives to promote car-pooling and other means of transportation, such as motorbikes and bicycles”.
SDM’s Vice President, Ian Zahra, explained that SDM shall be revealing more reactions about the whitepaper, after consultation with students. Moreover, Zahra emphasised that having students waking up earlier is definitely not the right solution and if that is the attitude that is to be taken in order to solve national problems, then the approach is wrong.
