According to the Daily Mail, Lifetime has cancelled the popular TV series "Devious Maids’ due to low ratings. Whereas the finale of the first season reached over 3 million viewers on ABC, the audience number dropped with each consecutive season, coming to an average of under one million viewers by the fourth season.
"Devious Maids’ was the first series with an all-Latin ensemble cast, based on a telenovela format, to be aired on English television. The show was loosely based on a Mexican telenovela entitled "Ellas son la AlegrÃa del Hogar’ and was created by Marc Cherry, famous for creating "Desperate Housewives’.
The show, featuring Latina maids working for wealthy families in Beverly Hills, stirred controversy when it was first premiered in 2013. As reported by CNN on June 24, 2013, the Latino community felt that the show would only serve to worsen the existent stereotype that Latinas can only play the role of maids, gardeners and nannies in society.
Despite initial criticism, the show has become part of many students’ lives and will definitely be missed this scholastic year!
