The Minister for Health, Jo Etienne Abela, has released upcoming plans regarding Maltese healthcare. Among the plans mentioned, is the goal to relocate any non-clinical service, which includes the University of Malta’s medical school, currently situated at Mater Dei Hospital to a ‘health village’. There are plans for the ‘health village’ to be developed in Gwardamangia.

This has led to the Malta Medical Students’ Association to release a statement, expressing their concerns. In this statement, it is highlighted that a new medical school was meant to be built by 2022 and that now being in 2024, the finish date of this project is still uncertain. MMSA further states that failing to develop the new medical school impacts the quality of the education given as well as the available space.

It is mentioned that the proximity to Mater Dei Hospital is beneficial for students as given that it is the “most established hospital on the island”, great teaching opportunities are available and allows students, lecturers, and healthcare workers to easily schedule necessary lectures and clinical rotations.

MMSA goes on to mention that turning healthcare into something private is also concerning, particularly in light of recent developments involving Vitals Global Healthcare and Steward Healthcare International. The association emphasizes the need for active involvement in the decision-making process to safeguard the interests of medical students and advocate for the maintenance of high-quality healthcare for patients.

MMSA has taken proactive steps by contacting the Minister, seeking a meeting to discuss these concerns and contribute to the decision-making dialogue, and is waiting for a response.

]]>
MKSA and SACES release a statement about the necessity for free access to Adobe Software for students that form part of the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences and the Faculty of the Built Environment.

The statement highlights the fact that students of these faculties are forced to purchase the Adobe Software in order to complete their course. Given that today’s cost of living has increased substantially, the cost for said software could come at the “detriment” of the students.

MKSA and SACES go on to mention the fact that computers with the installed software have decreased for the Faculty of the Built Environment. In regards to the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences, one computer lab requires a booking and the other is full of lagging computers, making the software hard to use.

Equal access for all students

Given that foreign and Gozitan students often go home during the weekends and holiday periods, they are at more of a disadvantage being that they’re unable to make use of the computer labs.

Among the software that is needed, students must also purchase equipment such as DSLR cameras for particular study units, with no additional stipend being given.

MKSA and SACES assert that any student making use of Adobe Software in order to pursue their course and education should have free access.

SACES emphasises the fact that softwares such as Adobe are relied on by students and advocates for all to receive free access to Adobe Software. They refer to “creative and academic potential” of students at the university being negatively impacted through the “unequal access” to needed resources.

Adobe products are labelled as “vital” and maintaining clear communication about changes to the availabilities of the resources is a must. According to SACES, these measures will ensure that various educational needs are met, across different areas of study.

Petition to show support

In a statement given by Kris Bajada, student representative on the University of Malta Council, supporting the petition is a priority in order to ensure “students receive what they require” and “rightfully deserve”. The need to unite and support student struggles is highlighted as it’s pointed out that one student’s struggles can impact all those at university.

Bajada states that university students form a “community of learners” who try to get the most out of the resources offered to students. Providing free access to Adobe Software will strengthen those resources.

The statement mentions that being able to attain the objective of access to Adobe Software will serve as an impactful message which directly proves that unity leads to achievements.

All students are encouraged to support the petition to show that this is not only a want, but a necessity.

Written by Luke Muscat & Martina Farrugia

Following The Third Eye’s AGM on Monday 13 October, Giulia Debattista Montalto was elected as the organisation’s new president for the term 2023/24.

Farewell to the Past TTE Team

The AGM was a great way for the previous TTE team to commemorate the unique experiences that stemmed from this journey. From an incredible video of the best highlights crafted by Matthew Schembri, to the sentimental and yet inspiring speeches provided by Martina Farrugia and Waleed, to the election of the new executive, this night was a cornerstone of this university chapter for everyone who attended the AGM.

We thought we would switch things up in this AGM and ask remarks from the ex-president and then transition to the new executive for the upcoming term.

Q: What has The Third Eye meant to you in the past two years?

The Third Eye was and will always be the place where I met, formed and continuously fought with my second family, the chosen family. Speaking on behalf of everyone, it was a journey to find ourselves, find our passion and creativity in the midst of all the chaos, as well as stand for what we believe in.

Waleed Alhweeshel

My first 2 years with The Third Eye have been a roller coaster, with many ups and downs. But every moment was a truly beautiful adventure that I am so grateful I got to experience with the old Executive. And I am looking forward to building a relationship just as close-knight with the new executive and seeing what new adventures will come our way
