]]>Members of The Third Eye had the pleasure of meeting Oliver Borg, co-founder of J’Oli, where they got to learn about J’Oli and its origins, all while witnessing firsthand the stellar service provided at the establishment!
Co-owners Oliver Borg and Jean Paul Cascun had talked about starting a catering business for a long time. Their business backgrounds set them apart from the competition, and their unique and innovative approach to food earned them popularity from all over the island.
J’Oli now has two more locations in Msida and Valletta, after opening one in Sliema in 2014.
The origin of the name was actually the most time-consuming aspect of their project. They came up with the name ‘J’Oli’ by combining their first names, Jean Paul and Oliver, to create an original combination.
Oliver and Jean Paul wanted to make food that was both delicious and nutritious. What better way to promote a healthy lifestyle than to open a salad sandwich bar where customers can make their own salads?
Customers have the option of building their own wraps and salads by selecting their own ingredients!
Oliver believes that allowing customers to choose their own ingredients will encourage them to eat the food more passionately.
Furthermore, by allowing customers to select their own ingredients for their meals, they have made their establishment more feasible to those with food allergies or picky eaters.
J’Oli aims to make healthy food accessible to everyone, regardless of the ingredients they prefer.
Moreover, they believe in the importance of providing children with healthier food options from a young age in order to teach them the importance of eating food products that are beneficial to the body.
“Whatever is not good for us, is not good for the customer”
The founders of J’Oli believe in serving fresh meals to its customers. Which is why they prepare their food with the freshest ingredients available on the island, which contributes to their excellent service!
Jean Paul and Oliver wanted to offer students a healthy dining option close to campus. They want students to live a healthy lifestyle, and what better way to encourage that than to start a business that promotes healthy living just minutes from campus?
Furthermore, J’Oli takes pride in providing exceptional and prompt service, ensuring that students do not have to wait long for their food, making it the ideal place to grab great food in a matter of minutes while still making it to class on time!
Students are always on the look-out for new places to try and new food to discover, so if you’re currently looking for a new place to hang out at, J’Oli is the perfect spot! You’ll be met with a stellar service, fantastic prices, and amazing food!
Oliver teased a new upcoming project that is currently in the works. Fans of J’Oli should keep an eye out for any future announcements from the establishment!

]]>The post Fine Scents Brewing | All About The Soap Café appeared first on The Third Eye.
]]>This charming boutique shop is the humble home to some fine artisan beauty products. You will find over 50 different handmade soaps available for all skin types and ailments. Explore their variety ethically made lotions, balms and scrubs, all created by various artists and artisans for men, women and babies. Nobody is excluded at the Soap Café!
The Soap Café’s mission and ethos is to use and produce goods that benefit all humans, animals and the planet they walk upon. The use of toxic free and ethically sourced products reduces the harmful impact on the planet and safe guards our own individual health also. Most of the products found in this store are vegan, however a handful of products do contain ethically sourced honey, beeswax and/ or goat’s milk. These products still ensure that all life forms are being respected in this production process.
The Soap Café also has a refill station. Once you buy a product from the Soap Café, you can return to refill your freshly crafted items made with local ingredients from their store upon bringing your own container. If you want to spice things up a little you can also ask one of their beauty chefs to create a customised product to your liking on the spot!
Store owner Charlene, started experimenting with her own personal cosmetic care back in 1999 due to various skin conditions. She told The Third Eye:
I was fed up of being a guinea pig to orthodox methods. I got in beauty therapy followed by herbalism, aromatherapy, photography, and product design. Almost a decade later, in 2008, Soap Café was officially created from my parent’s kitchen, selling a few soap bars during events.
I opened my first shop in 2009. The business grew slowly yet steadily from there. It was quite unique for Malta at the time, and most of my energy went into educating the public about sustainable and cruelty free products ;- words like ‘vegan’ and ‘organic’ were not as popularized as today especially in the local scene of cosmetic brands. For quite a few years, Soap Café was ironically more popular in countries such as Japan and Korea rather than in our own country!
I create each product with loads of TLC and I’m very proud of each creation because they all have their unique qualities.
Since the Soap Café prides itself in using locally grown and natural ingredients, they love working with seasonal produce. What better way to ravish in the autumn season than with a luxurious pumpkin and chair tea soap bar? You should also keep your eye out for a fresh Christmas range which launches in mid-November.
Regardless of the season, the Soap Café continuously strives to create high quality products. Rather than focusing on having just a large repertoire of goods, they focus on making sure that our packaging, ingredients, and methods fit the ethos of reducing the impact of consumerism whilst remaining profitable.
We have been recognized in various countries, we have been listed on magazines in various languages, and we have customers from all over the world. Yet the locals still carry the stigma that locally made products are not as good as foreign brands. Thankfully with the rise of various talented local artist and artisans things are changing rapidly.
Our aim is that in the next decade, Soap Café will be the cosmetic brand synonymous with our beloved Maltes Islands.
You can also order these delights through the Soap Café’s website here.

]]>Daph’s bakes is all about providing fresh, delicious bespoke (which means custom!) bakes and treats. When one visits her Facebook or Instagram page, they are greeted with a colourful variety of cakes, muffins, cookies – you name it! And what makes the brand even more special is that Daphne truly thought of everyone on the allergen spectrum. Almost all of the bakes can be made gluten-free, lactose-free and even vegan! No one gets left behind.
Daphne shared with The Third Eye that she has always wanted to open up her own bakery but some factors might have restrained her from doing so. When the pandemic hit, some decided to wait for the storm to pass but in Daphne’s case, she pushed herself even more! She worked eagerly to open up Daphne’s Bespoke Bakes and she now owns a little bakery from her own home.
Daphne is currently working on an Autumn giveaway – just in time to get all of us in the autumn vibes. Loads of delicious treats will be given for one to enjoy with his friends, family or, if you’re feeling a bit greedy that day, for yourself!
The local baker looks forward to collaborating with local coffee shops and small restaurants where she can supply and display her bakes.
Daphne shared that her favourite creation was by far an ocean-themed cake that she made for her nephew’s third birthday!
“It took me four days to finish it but the look on his face when he saw it was priceless!”
The local baker would eventually like to take her talent and skill and showcase it to other parts of the world.
“In the next 5 to 10 years, I would like to move abroad and open up my own small bakery – keeping up my values of fresh, delicious and affordable bespoke bakes.”
While we must admit that we will miss her heavenly creations, we absolutely cannot wait to see Daphne following her dreams!

]]>It all started 3 years ago – I always had an interest in sewing and I loved the idea of making my own clothes so I took a sewing course and during the pandemic I had the time to create the brand Bużżieqa Ħamra – it was a chance to share what I love doing with other people.
Following this ignited spark, Rebecca learnt embroidery by herself. As she kept working with this textile, she realised it was her favourite. She loved the fact that embroidery allows her to draw on fabric. Rebecca also uses her skills to gift her one-of-a-kind creations to her friends. Other than that, she makes costumes for herself and friends when occasions like carnival festivities come around.
Inspirations for these costumes emerge from Rebecca’s interest in Rococo dress and religious architecture and interiors. Making costumes is a creative process that I really enjoy, and is something I would like to pursue in a professional setting.
Rebecca’s had the opportunity to be offered commission work, notably by the Co-Cathedral of St. John producing face-masks. She has also created a mask to be used in a music video for a local musician Hearts Beating In Time and an assortment of customization work for face-masks, tote bags, clothing and others.
I’m curious as to where this vocation leads me. I have many ideas on what other products I want to make and I can’t wait to share them with all of you!

]]>The post Mystical Bakes | All About Mistika Cakes appeared first on The Third Eye.
]]>19 years of experience as a chef; with a repertoire that includes leading 5 star hotels, fine dining restaurants and unique cafe’s, Lara has a serious passion for baking. She is currently holding down a full-time job as Eri’s Gourmet Café’s Pastry Chef, but she’s got her own little side business which fuels her passion further.
Lara shared with The Third Eye;
I’m lucky to work at such a unique place that gives me the opportunity to create new baked item’s and it is thanks to this that I get my muse and my passion for baking.
Although Lara had always wished to have a small business she was too scared to take the leap. 6 years ago, Lara was asked to host a cupcake table at the Malta Comic Con and she graciously accepted. Year after year the stand became increasingly successful and Lara took it as a clear sign to start up her own baking brand.
Towards the end of last year, Lara brainstormed ideas in hopes of finding the right name to fit her marvelously mystical cakes. She searched and searched for a simple yet catchy name that would best represent her. Lara’s friends pitched a couple of great name ideas but it just became harder to choose. This was until….
A friend of mine suggested Mistika which is the Maltese translation for Mystique, I instantly fell in love with the name and from there we started our Brand!
Starting out this Brand came with many challenges, such as the creation of her favourite work- the Geode Cake
I made the cake for a close friend of mine, I was terrified of doing it as it was a first for me but it reached my high expectations and surpassed them.
Mistika has developed into a well organized and self-sufficient brand. Lara is a firm believer of ‘quality over quantity.’ She’ll only accept a minimum amount of orders to devout her full attention to each request as it comes in. These orders are made with ethically sourced products and ingredients, turning to local Maltese produce whenever possible as Lara likes supporting small local businesses that are rich in quality.
Lara spoke to The Third Eye about some of the work she has done with local businesses;
I recently finished a collobaration with a fellow creator ‘X or X Creative’ although our creations are entirely different, it was very intresting and fun for us both as we learned about each others skills and talents and the work that goes behind our creations. I also have a few future collaborations with other small businesses planned out for the coming year.
Lara’s got a few ideas in the pipeline for us. She is currently working on the launch of an exclusive Mistika Menu- it will host small unique pastries containing from a variety of traditional Maltese flavours to modern favourites, each with a unique Mistika twist to it.
Lets hope that this Menu will include Lara’s personal favourites; the Biscoff cake ( a top seller)!
Looking a bit further ahead, Lara dreams of owning her own small bakery one day. She feels great satisfaction when clients return for more order as it fills her with hope and pride, seeing these clients in store would be quite fulfilling.
Lara also shared with The Third Eye:
Something that is also very important behind my whole Brand is the constant support that I get from my partner Neil my family and my friends, their support keeps my Brand going.

]]>Meet Gabriella- a 20 year old with a passion for art, travelling and entrepreneurship. Having just finished her degree in Business, she is now working full speed ahead to create handmade resin treasures.
Her small local business, ‘Little Treasures’ is collection of lovingly handcrafted home decor and jewellery. Everything is created from the heart and is a reflection of Gabriella’s passion and enthusiasm for art.
Gabriella first came across resin in September of 2020 as she was scrolling through TikTok.
I was instantly intrigued and after watching multiple tutorials, I decided to purchase the equipment and start experimenting with resin as a hobby.Little treasures officially started earlier this year in February. I still didn’t know much, but it was a great opportunity for me to explore my own creativity and learn what people actually like and don’t like. It was extremely difficult for me during the beginning, as I had to balance out my final year of studying for a BA in Business Enterprise, and running my own small business.
Gabriella’s small Maltese business is pretty much Aladdin’s Cave of Wonders. You can find an array of unequivocally unique items, from earrings to pendants and key chains. Gabriella also creates personalised gifts in all shapes and sizes for her customers. If you’re not sure what get your girlfriend or your mother to show them how much you love them, we recommend you pay Gabriella a visit.
Although this is Gabriella’s full-time job, she absolutely loves it. She shared her thoughts with The Third Eye:
I have always been a fan of jewellery, so being able to create them from scratch myself and watching other people want to buy my handmade jewellery is extremely rewarding.
Gabriella’s story comes to show that a dash of creativity and whole lot of passion is capable of creating absolute treasures like these.
Although for the time being Gabriella is working with resin primarily, she intends to broaden her horizons. She named her store ‘Little Treasures’ to keep her explorative eye wide open. With this being said, Gabriella shared:
I am planning on expanding my brand further and start creating other handmade products in the near future.
Gabriella closed off her interview with The Third Eye by stating:
My dream as an entrepreneur is to see my brand flourish and be successful. I would love to have my own online shop, where people can just browse through and order whatever they like. It is definitely something that I would love to work on, especially if I plan on expanding the brand further with additional product offering.

]]>The post Introducing Kikkra Malta: A Local Artisanal Haven appeared first on The Third Eye.
]]>The Mediterranean island we call home is overflowing with talent; some less known than others. Kikkra Malta is an online shop that brings to you utterly unique products, authentically made on Malta’s shores in the most sustainable ways possible. This virtual haven has given local artisans a space to share their creations with us, building a more supportive and sustainable environment one purchase at a time.
Anthea Maria Ellul and Becky Dalli are two bright young women, both graduated in the health care sector. Their love for helping people transferred into the creation of Kikkra Malta back in 2019 when they realised that local artisans were struggling to find their footing launching a small business. Anthea and Becky had been searching for the right entrepreneurial idea for a while, and providing marketing, promotional and website services for this niche sector of creators seemed to light that bulb.
The journey was not easy… even recent addition to the Kikkra team, Sarah Jane admitted that her faith in the whole idea was quite low at the start. Why do you think that is?
Anthea, co-founder of Kikkra Malta told The Third Eye;
“Many were sceptical about the idea and after a while I became sceptical too. There was support, but it was mostly because they were friends and family. Underlying this, there were elements of uncertainty. Mostly because people around me didn’t believe there was much talent on the island. Maybe only 10-15 artisans at best ”
Anthea was on the verge of giving up on Kikkra. The website was not taking off, sales were incredibly low and when the Covid-19 pandemic came around, it just felt like another hit. But with some re-strategising, Kikkra Malta experienced an uplifting turn-around.
“We decided to start offering our services for free when we noticed that a bunch of new artisans and small local businesses were popping up on Instagram. We started reaching out to people, asking if they wanted to join our platform for free and slowly, slowly- we started building our Kikkra Community. Artisans kept joining the community and it just started growing.” -Anthea (Kikkra Malta)
“Our mission is to profusely support local and to avoid fast buying, because Malta is a tiny island that’s exploding with talent. We want to become the main channel for all these people, to be their helping hand and maybe in the future, Kikkra Malta will also start launching products of its own!”
Anthea carried on telling The Third Eye about the importance of supporting local creators:
“This all started as a hobby for many of these artisans, partially because they were made redundant due to COVID-19. So, the main reason why you should shop locally is to encourage and support these artists. It is the one thing that is currently striving for them. I think that is its main focus- to safeguard their mental health, support positivity and at the end of the day, their talent. Because there is a lot.”
Anthea describes the Kikkra Community-made entirely of the artisans featured on the website, as ‘Bubbly extroverts, who are all there to support one another.’ To date, there are 39 members on the site. Have a look Kikkra’s talent featured below in a carefully categorised list:
“My current work has given me ample time and practice in perfecting what I love doing the most-creating pieces.”
“Skylines, sunsets and characteristic landmarks, I am experimenting with my vision of the Maltese culture and sights.”
“Art is an expression which might allure you into becoming a better version of yourself.”
“Art can have such a tremendous effect on our emotional well-being, and I am passionate about how it can uplift and inspire.”
“I felt I wanted to find a style that is fun and makes me happy every step of the way. This is how ‘Pretty in Pastel’ was created, with bright colours and original subjects.”
“I started making bows for my pet rabbit, and at that moment I decided to open up a small business with handmade hair accessories and other creations.”
“I wanted to share these products with the public to show how beautiful sustainable products can be made.”
“The various unique and original creations are produced locally and can be tailor-made to the requirements to suit the occasion as well the aroma required.”
“My candles are a reflection of my creativity and character.”
“I needed to do something about my anxiety, so you could say I tapped into my creative side and decided to try out something new which turned out to be making earrings from polymer clay.”
“I love eccentric fashion and accessories, so I made some earrings for myself that I always wanted to have but never bought because either I couldn’t find any, or they were too expensive.”
“You can be sure that you are purchasing only the finest fabrics, made of pure natural fibres, hand sewn at a boutique atelier with talented hands who put their care and expertise on each piece to ensure the highest quality.”
“Although I paint on canvas and paper as well, my passion has led me to painting on clothes and fabric.”

“My creations are each painstakingly made with much love, passion and care to every detail, using only the finest teddy-making materials.”
“I kept working at developing new products and immersing myself in the amazing physical and therapeutic benefits of essential oils and botanical extracts provided by nature.”
“All the hours spent designing, searching for materials and finally making my jewellery are the ones I can calm myself down and can steep myself in what I love doing.”
“I quickly found myself becoming obsessed with the creative pieces that were made using resin, from jewellery to home décor-the ideas were endless.”
“Denise makes a unique line of natural jewellery based on bees and local flowers. Ray is involved in the development of a medical device based on honey used for wound treatment.”
“As humans we have such great creativity if we let our inner self lead us.”
“Our aim is to always provide quality handmade crafts.”
“I love infusing my work with bits of nature, like pressed flowers in resin or beach pebbles, while also utilizing delicate Maltese lace for texture, or wine crochet elements.”
“I make my own handmade jewellery bearing my French name, with the aim of creating various styles for women giving that French chic and delicate look.”
“I started creating handmade jewellery from a young age thanks to my grandma, who taught me all the basics and how to use crafted wire to make jewellery.”
“Our staff members aim to ensure all customer touch points reflect a vision of confidence and self-belief.”
“We look to positively change the lives of people as it isn’t just jewellery, it’s giving people the feeling of beauty.”
“Being creative and turning thoughts into beautiful pieces, is not only deeply satisifying for me, it also helps me cope with whatever the day, or life even, throws my way.
“We strive to produce products mainly out of recycled materials as much as possible. “
“Wood & Tassel allows me to transmit emotion to anyone wearing these pieces and also to experiment into a world of colours, styles and textures.”
“I once read that life is tough but so are we, I refuse to give up on life. On my dreams.”
