With less than a month away from the commencement of the Euro 2016 tournament, it’s high time we take a look on some interesting facts:

1.   This year shall be the 15th Euro tournament to be held.

2.   France  will be hosting for a record third time. France also won the Euro the last time they hosted in 1984.

3.   Euro  2016 will be the biggest one to date, with 24 teams competing.   There were only 16 teams competing in the previous Euro 2012.

4.   Iceland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Slovakia and Albania will be making their Euro debut this year.

5.   The  first 3 teams of each group will be qualifying to the knockout stage, unlike past tournaments which only saw the winner and the runner-up qualifying.

6.   There  will be 10 stadiums hosting the tournament.

7.   The  winner of this year’s tournament will automatically qualify for the Confederations Cup 2017, which is to be held in Russia.

8.   Both  Spain and Germany are in the chance of winning it for a new record of four times. Germany will be heading into their 12th Euro tournament.

9.    The last largest victory was that of the previous Euro 2012, where Spain demolished Italy with a 4-0 win.

10.  The top scorers coming from the qualifying stages are Robert Lewandowski with 12 goals, followed by Zlaten Ibrahimovic (11) and Thomas Muller (9).

A few weeks before students start to debate whether to study or sit back, open a bottle of beer, relax and watch their favourite national team play, Panini Group issues its traditional album stickers.

The first album published was for the 1970 World Cup, which was held in Mexico. They feature stickers of each national team’s player and information on them, such as the team they play for. It also includes stadiums, mascots and each national team badges. This year’s album contains 680 stickers, 50 of which are printed on a shiny and metallic material. New characteristics of this year’s album comprise of highlighting the team’s top player and a double page spread for all teams of the six groups.

It is a custom in Malta to trade stickers with each other. Some take it to school and swap during break time whilst older people swap outside Anastasi’s shop in Valletta (the agent of Panini Group) on a busy Saturday morning. Social media has also become a platform for swapping. There is a Facebook page where people post their missing stickers and other comment with their availabilities.

Over the years the price of these albums has continuously been increasing. In Malta, the lowest price of one box (100 packets of 5 stickers each) is that of €65 (€0.14 per sticker). Is it due to the increase in quality or are businessmen being greedy?  Those young children of the 1970s who are now adults still collect these albums to date. Some sell it for a high price, others keep the collection as prestige. It is doubtful whether new collectors will be interested in putting together this album if prices continue to rise. For this year’s album, it is said that one requires almost a box and a half to assemble it. This is due to the fact that a box contains 500 stickers and this year’s album has 680 stickers to collect. There is already a shortage of 180 stickers, neglecting any duplicates one might have. This may discourage people to pay that hefty price and try to collect it.

Think About Everyone This Christmas https://thirdeyemalta.com/think-about-everyone-this-christmas/ Sat, 05 Dec 2015 20:40:00 +0000 https://thirdeyemalta.com/?p=430 Nahsebfik.com is a website that tries to grant the wishes of such elderly people.

I promised myself that this Christmas I will not only think about my own wants. There are many people who spend Christmas alone due to the fact that they do not have relatives, or are not visited at homes they live in. I promised myself that I will not only think about these vulnerable people, but I will also try to help them – and I found the most unique way to do so.

Nahsebfik.com is a website that tries to grant the wishes of such elderly people. Besides the fact that they might be spending Christmas alone, these elderly individuals also face many health problems. Social workers are contributing their free time to try to fulfil their wishes.

How does it work?

On the website, you will find a number names of the elderly with what they wish. Most of them ask for clothing items, such as slippers, nightdresses, towels and underwear. When you click on the name, another window emerges showing you the clothing size/shoe size of the individual. It also asks you for your name and surname, mobile number and e-mail address. After you confirm to fulfil this wish, a confirmation e-mail is sent. The social worker in charge of the elderly should contact you within 3 days to tell you where the elderly lives and when you can go to deliver the gift, or where you can send it to.

There are two ways you can deliver the gift: either by sending it via post to the address which the social worker will provide you with, or by delivering it to them yourself.

I have already confirmed to complete two wishes, and I am sure that I will be granting more. Let us be thankful for all that we have during this festive season, but let us not forget these people and try our best to give them a helping hand.

Seldom do you find a teenage girl who watches wrestling nowadays. You might have watched some wrestling when you were 9 or 10 years old, in the era of Rey Mysterio, Eddie Gurrero and Edge. But for some others, including myself, it’s in our weekly schedule to watch the three-hour episode of “Monday Night Raw”.

One thing should be made clear. WWE stand for “World Wrestling Entertainment“. No, it’s not fake. Yes, it is scripted. These wrestlers are there to entertain. An actor can easily get injured while on set, and so can a wrestler whilst doing stunts. The only difference is that the latter gets injured live on television in front of an arena full of fans. Wrestlers are trained to perform stunts and tricks in a way not to injure themselves or their opponent. One simple change in a move can lead to serious consequences, surgeries and even bringing their career to a sudden halt.

The worst thing a wrestler can receive from a live audience is silence. The reason is that when the audience cheers or boos, it means that they are investing in the wrestler and that the wrestler has got the audience’s attention. Whether their character is a face (good guy/girl) or a heel (bad guy/girl), it is important for them to get an audience’s response. If not, they are irrelevant.

You’re all probably thinking, “She should get a life…still watching WWE”. I’ve been watching wrestling ever since I was 9 years old and lately, I’ve been hooked even more (mainly due to the fact that Liverpool have been a disappointment for the past 4-5 years). And I’m not planning on stopping anytime soon.
