Artists uniting through an online exhibition | BFA Ctrl Z

BFA Ctrl Z is a group made up of 35 students in their final year, reading for a BFA in Digital Arts at the University of Malta. They are curating an exhibition that features every individual’s dissertation project, collected under the umbrella theme Ctrl Z.

What is this exhibition about?

Ctrl Z is about a group of emerging artists with strong voices, specialising in a variety of traditional and digital forms of visual expression. The diversity of their projects spans over multiple media such as illustration, 3D animation, 2D animation, graphic design, videography, photography, VR (virtual reality), and AR (augmented reality) integration. The final works discuss a multitude of topics, some are deeply personal, others tackle social issues, and some are purely passion projects.

Why the name ‘Ctrl Z’?

The name Ctrl Z refers to the keyboard shortcut for ‘undo’. Although artists are passionate about different media, this keystroke is the one mostly used amongst them. Through trial and error – successes are developed through accidental discovery, a mistake transformed and taken advantage of. It is also a representation of these artists’ journey through university, and through this exhibition curation process – all the times they have felt downtrodden by the enormity of a task, but chose to unite and try again.

What was the process like?

It involved a great amount of coordination and cooperation. They spotted what tasks needed to be completed, and each volunteered for a role in a particular team – communications, marketing, sponsors, illustration, graphic design, photography & videography, and motion graphics. Each team had a team Lead, and they coordinated with the two exhibition Representatives/ Project Managers, who kept their lecturers informed.

Perhaps one of the more meaningful outcomes of this process has been our resounding ability to stand together as a group and work towards our common goal. We’ve always been a bonded class, and we’ve become incredibly comfortable and familiar with each other as friends and as colleagues.

How will the exhibition work?

A website will be launched on the 29th of May and shared through online media. The launch will be hosted by these artists and friends, families, sponsors, University lecturers and the general public are all invited to join them. Anyone will be able to access their exhibition website and experience each artist’s work individually through a dedicated page.

How was ‘Ctrl Z’ affected by the COVID-19 situation?

The creation of an online exhibition – which is the first for the Media and Knowledge Sciences faculty, and possibly for the UoM, is a direct result of the COVID19 outbreak. The artists were initially planning to hold a physical exhibition at a space in Junior College, but that quickly became impossible and had to re-strategise. After many discussions between the faculty, an online exhibition through a website was decided to be the best option.

Many students had to alter or drastically change their projects in order to accommodate this completely different medium.

It was difficult to accept and adapt, but ultimately we’ve managed to curate and create an artistic experience for our audience to absorb, one which justifies and represents our commitment, effort and progress throughout the course of the BFA, as well as pioneering the event in our faculty.
