What is ASA?
The Arts Students’ Association (ASA) is a student organisation encompassing all Arts Departments and representing the interests of all Arts students. An Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) was held on Wednesday 2nd November at the Arts Lecture Theatre, chaired by Aimée Mallia. The EGM explained that the purpose of the ASA was to serve as a platform through which students from one department could connect with students from other Arts departments.
Why an EGM?
The ASA was dormant since 2017, where absence was prominent during the COVID years. It is for this reason that Aimée Mallia, Laurence Schumacher and Maxine Tanti endeavoured to rejuvenate the ASA. Although elections for the executive roles were held, no nomination for the role of financial officer was made.
Since the financial officer is among the core executive roles – together with the president, vice president, secretary general and educational officer – the executive could not be formed as it would not be recognised by the university senate. It was therefore decided that the candidates elected would instead form a working group.
The ASA working group comprises:
- Aimée Mallia
- Laurence Schumacher
- Nicole Vassallo
- Michaela Sultana
- Luke Gauci
Members will be working to organise activities to continue raising the ASA’s profile among the student body. An annual general meeting (AGM) will then be called in March 2023 to elect an executive committee and formally reestablish the Arts Students’ Association.
