5 Reasons why Traffic in Malta is Unbearable

Despite the fact the beginning of a new scholastic year might be very exciting for a number of students, these past two weeks definitely didn’t offer much adrenaline for the thousands of people who were stuck in traffic for hours.

While the majority of drivers rightfully complained that spending hours and hours in traffic is an unacceptable situation, others opted to kill their time by taking the usual selfies and photos of the never-ending traffic ahead of them.

But like anything else, traffic has its list of causes, and although some of them are easily noticed, others are less viral.

1.   Roundabouts

By now, it should have occurred to the authorities that flyovers should replace Malta’s main roundabouts. Driving towards one of these, one can very often notice drivers who are too petrified to move out of a ‘give-way’, even though a car is coming from a relatively long distance. More admirable are those who are completely confused whether they should get on the inner lane or the outer lane of the roundabout.

2.   Unreliable Public Transport

It is indeed fascinating that after all these years and rotations in government, public transport seems to be worsening on a daily basis.

3.   Qormi

While the old village of Qormi might be renowned for bread and food festivals, through the years it also seems to have become a sort of European headquarters for traffic and careless driving. Fortified by massive roundabouts and with a lot of people compelled to pass through it on their way to work/school, it is indeed a nightmare for every driver on a common day, let alone on a rainy one.

4.   Use of Cellphones

If anyone out there says that using their mobile phones whilst driving creates no havoc on the road, they are publicly declaring themselves as stupid. Let’s for a moment forget about the traffic accident that might occur, but how can any human being write a correct message on his mobile phone and at the same time guide his vehicle in a perfect manner, while having a complete knowledge of what is in front of him?

5.   Excessive Laziness

This sums up pretty much all of it. People in this country are lazy from every aspect. Too lazy to carpool, too lazy to walk 10 minutes from their parking spot, too lazy to cycle to work and even worse, too lazy to think.
