1) ’’If we ban hunting we are going to ban a Maltese tradition and a hobby.’’
No one is abolishing hunting. Next Saturday’s referendum is about pausing hunting for just 2 weeks; when the birds are at their most crucial time in their life of breeding. And besides, it’s never O.K. to condone anything which involves violence and death in the guise of a “hobby”.
2) ’’It’s part of the food chain’’
Thank God, we are living in a world where we don’t depend on hunting to feed ourselves. In our time, killing is a hobby not a necessity; and in that case, there are alternatives for those who perform this sport, such as ’plattini’. The animals we eat, such as chicken, are not hunted; they are bred for that particular purpose. And besides, birds such as’ summien’ and ’gamiem’ do not have particular nutrients that cannot be found in other food products. Some in favour of spring hunting are consistently bringing up the argument that abolishing spring hunting does not make sense when people are still fishing. This doesn’t really make sense because fish, unlike birds, have particular nutrients that are not found in other food products. And if one really thinks about it, fishing as a hobby often involves the fisherman releasing the fish back at sea.
3) For once in your life you can vote for what you think is right and just, without being influenced from your favourite political party.
4) “Banning spring hunting means the future banning of other hobbies.”
Again, hunting is not being abolished; it is simply being paused for a short period of time and honestly, I cannot think of any reason why we should halt other traditions if none of them involve the killing of a being.
